A true circle at 84" across, this hand-knotted Oriental rug is the kind of piece that solves a room rather than just filling it: a round entry, a rotunda, a breakfast area with a pedestal table. The pile is fine wool with silk worked into the highlights, clipped low so the drawing stays crisp, and the weave is dense enough that the flowers read as individual blossoms rather than blurred shapes. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic formal medallion, adapted to a circle so that every element radiates outward from one point. At the center sits a small ivory and sage rosette, ringed by an 8 lobed medallion of cream and burgundy filled with palmettes and curling leaves. From there the black field opens into a densely drawn all-over floral ground: fine vine scrolls, rosettes, serrated leaves and small paisley forms, with 4 burgundy cartouches set at the compass points and pendant finials reaching top and bottom. A burgundy inner frame separates the field from the wide ivory main border, which carries alternating burgundy and sage green panels of curving arabesques and large flower heads, each one drawn with outlines rather than flat blocks of color. Narrow guard stripes and a black edge finish the circle cleanly, so the pattern closes on itself with no awkward break in the repeat.

A Detailed Look at the Colors

The field is a deep, near true black that pushes every other shade forward. Against it the florals run through soft salmon and blush pink, buttery gold, pale wheat, celadon and sage green, with small touches of powder blue and a warm brown in the leaves. The medallion is the lightest point in the rug, moving from ivory to a muted sage center, and the same ivory carries into the broad outer border where it reads closer to warm cream. Burgundy is the anchor color, a slightly brick-toned wine red used for the inner frame, the 4 field cartouches and the border panels, and it keeps the black from looking cold. Where the silk highlights catch the light, the pinks and golds brighten noticeably and the same rug looks softer from one side than the other, which is normal for a wool and silk pile. The overall effect is dark and formal from a distance, and surprisingly warm and multi colored up close.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, where a number of long-running workshops weave traditional city-style medallion designs to a genuinely fine standard on hand looms. The foundation is cotton, knotted with a wool pile carrying silk in the highlight areas, and the knot count is high enough to hold the curved line work you see in the border arabesques and the tiny outlined flower heads. Round weaving is harder than it looks: the weaver has to shorten and lengthen rows on a straight loom while keeping the pattern symmetrical in all directions, and a badly woven circle shows it immediately in a flat spot on the edge. This one holds its shape, lies flat, and keeps the black ground even across the full 7' x 7' diameter, with the selvedge and fringe finished by hand. It is a dense, heavy piece for its size and built to take real traffic under a table or in a foyer.
