9'6" x 14'3" Indian Oriental Rug | Traditional Navy Medallion | Fine Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

This is a room-filling hand-knotted Oriental rug made in India, woven in the classical medallion tradition with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. At 114" by 171" it covers a 12x15 room comfortably and still leaves a clean margin of floor on all 4 sides. The weave is tight and even, the pile is low and crisp so the drawing stays sharp, and the selvedges and fringe are intact with no repairs. Condition is excellent and the rug has never been used. Design and Motifs

The field is built around a single lobed center medallion with a small 8 petal rosette at its heart, ringed by curling cloud-band scrollwork and finished top and bottom with slender floral pendants. Around it the ground is filled edge to edge with an all-over lattice of rotating palmettes, serrated leaves and fine vine tracery, drawn in the curvilinear style that only works at a fine knot count. The 4 corner spandrels answer the medallion with large split palmettes and dense leafwork, creating the classic pole-and-corner layout that reads as formal without being stiff. The main border carries an alternating rosette and palmette procession linked by a thin meandering vine, flanked by narrow guard stripes of reciprocal floral heads. Among 10x14 Oriental rugs, this kind of full-field drawing is what separates a workshop piece from a simplified commercial copy: the pattern never repeats lazily, and the two halves mirror each other cleanly across the long axis. Color Palette

The ground is a deep near-black navy, the kind of blue that reads as black in low light and opens up to indigo under a lamp or in daylight. Against it the medallion sits in a warm brick red with a camel and ivory inner cartouche, so the eye is pulled straight to the center of the room. The main border repeats that same brick red, which frames the dark field and keeps the rug from feeling heavy. Inside the field the vines and palmettes are picked out in soft camel, sand, cream, dusty rose, sage green, teal and touches of pale gold, and that spread of muted secondary tones is what gives the surface its depth as you walk around it. Two of the corner spandrels shade toward a smoky slate blue rather than solid navy, a subtle variation that adds movement rather than looking like a flaw. Practically speaking, a dark field this saturated is forgiving in a busy house and pairs easily with wood floors, cream walls, leather, brass and both warm and cool upholstery.

Origin and Weaving Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and we say that without hedging. The weaving centers of northern India have spent decades refining classical Oriental drawing on cotton warps, and the best ateliers now produce medallion rugs with a knot count, a wool quality and a clarity of line that hold up next to far more expensive pieces. This rug is a good example: the knotting is regular across the full 171" length, the rows stay straight, the pile is sheared low so the fine vinework is not blurred, and the wool has a quiet sheen rather than a synthetic gloss. The back shows a clean, legible grid of knots and a firm handle, which is why a rug this size will lie flat and wear slowly under real traffic.
