A full circle of finely drawn floral work, this 7'10" x 8' hand-knotted rug pairs an ivory field with a deep black border and a pile of fine wool lifted by silk highlights. Circles are the hardest format a workshop can take on, because every vine and every rosette has to be re-plotted on a curve rather than repeated down a straight field, and this one holds its geometry beautifully from the center rosette out to the hand-tied ivory fringe. It sits flat, the edge is true, and the pile still has the crisp, unwalked nap of a piece that has never been used. Among round rugs at this diameter, a fully curvilinear floral drawing of this density is uncommon. Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over floral scheme rather than a single dominant medallion. A small multi-petal rosette marks the exact center, and from it a lattice of thin scrolling vines radiates outward, connecting rows of palmettes, serrated saz leaves, split-leaf arabesques and clusters of open blossoms. The close-up photograph shows how tightly the drawing is resolved: each rosette has 3 or 4 distinct shades within it, the leaf tips come to a fine point, and the connecting stems stay only 1 or 2 knots wide. The black main border runs an alternating rhythm of large flowering palmettes and curling vine, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of soft sage and camel, each filled with its own miniature flower chain. A plain ivory outer band closes the circle before the fringe, which is knotted and trimmed evenly all the way around.

Ivory Ground Against a Deep Black Border

The field reads as a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, which is what keeps the rug from feeling cold in daylight. Against it the palette is restrained and layered: rust and terracotta in the larger palmettes, salmon and soft rose in the smaller blossoms, gold and mustard in the flower centers, sage and celadon green through the leafwork, with deep burgundy and small touches of pale blue used sparingly as accents. The main border is a true black, and that hard edge is exactly what gives the ivory center its lift, the way a mat gives a print definition. Narrow guard bands in dusty camel and pale green soften the transition. Where silk has been used in the highlights, the pile catches light at an angle and those passages shift a half tone brighter as you walk around the rug.

Weaving Quality and Origin

This is a workshop piece made in China, where the finest traditional hand-knotted weaving has been produced for decades on cotton foundations with tightly spun wool. The reverse, shown against a ruler, tells the story: small, evenly packed knots in straight rows, the full pattern legible from the back, and a clean selvage that follows the curve without puckering. That knot count is what allows the curvilinear drawing, the thin vines and the graded shading in the flower heads; a coarser weave simply cannot hold those lines. As an Oriental rug in a true round format at nearly 8 feet across, it suits a circular dining table, a rotunda entry or the center of a square room, and at this condition it has its whole life still ahead of it.
