6' x 9'4" Silk Hereke Design Rug | Charcoal Black Tone-on-Tone Floral | Brand New, Never Used

This is a dark rug that rewards a second look. At first glance the 6' x 9'4" field reads as near black, and then the light moves across the silk and an entire garden of palmettes, curled acanthus leaves and blossoming vines rises out of the ground in pewter, graphite and the faintest rose taupe. It is a hand-knotted silk rug in the Hereke manner, brand new and never walked on, with a clean cotton foundation and thick ivory fringe still crisp at both ends. The 6 by 9 footprint is the most useful proportion we sell, sitting comfortably under a sofa group or a 6 seat table, and it belongs squarely among our 6x9 rugs. Every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the silk pile and the measurements.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a full all over composition rather than a single medallion, so the drawing repeats in mirrored pairs up the length of the rug. Large lobed rosette discs sit on the centre axis, each one packed with tiny concentric florets, and between them rise broad leaf forms that curl over like cresting waves. Small boteh shapes, tulips, carnations and split arabesque tendrils fill every remaining inch of ground, which is exactly what the Hereke drawing style demands: no dead space, no lazy corner. The border system runs 4 bands deep. A wide pewter main border carries a chain of dark cartouches linked by leaf sprays and cream rosettes, flanked inside and out by narrow guard stripes of trefoils and reciprocal cresting, all outlined in a fine antique gold line that keeps the layers legible against the black. The corner resolutions in image 5 and image 7 show the pattern turning cleanly, a detail weavers cut short on lesser goods.

A Charcoal and Black Palette Read Entirely in Silk

The ground is a true charcoal black, deep and even, with no mottling. Every motif on top of it is worked in a narrow band of neutrals: silver grey, gunmetal, warm pewter and a dusty rose taupe that reads almost bronze where the light catches it, plus small ivory and antique gold dots in the rosette centres and the guard stripes. Because the palette is so tight, the pattern is carried by the sheen of the silk rather than by colour contrast, which is why the rug changes character as you walk around it, one direction looking almost matte charcoal, the other silvering into light. The main border lifts to a soft mid grey, giving the field a frame that stops the whole piece from going flat. It is a natural fit for rooms built around charcoal and grey rugs, black lacquer, smoked glass and brushed metal.

The Hereke Tradition and the Quality of the Weave

Hereke is a court design language, built on curved line, dense floral repeats and silk, and it only works when the knot count is high enough to hold the drawing. This piece was hand-knotted in China, which is today one of the very few places still producing silk pile work of this refinement at scale, and the weavers there have been executing the Hereke repertoire to a high standard for decades. Turn the corner over, as in image 3, and the back tells the story: tight, regular rows, motifs fully legible from the reverse, a straight selvage and a flat true rectangle with no pull at the ends. Classified as an Oriental rug rather than a village weave, it is finished, formal and completely unused, the pile standing full height with the original lustre intact.
