Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic 3 part medallion composition. A scalloped ivory oval sits dead center, holding a gold cartouche and a small green rosette at its core, with fine curling arabesques and single blossoms filling the ivory ground around it. Above and below the medallion, matching pendants drop into the red field on thin stems. The field itself is not empty: it carries an all-over lattice of curling vines, palmettes, cypress leaves and tiny 5 petal blossoms that radiate outward from the center in a mirrored arrangement. Large ivory spandrels cut the 4 corners of the field, each one filled with the same vine work plus a soft peach palmette. The border system is deep, an ivory main band of alternating palmettes and scrolling leaves flanked by narrow guard stripes in sage green and gold, with a fine reciprocal minor band closing the outer edge.

The ground is a true ruby red, deep and slightly wine toned rather than orange, and because the pile is clipped short it picks up light and shifts from bright cherry to a darker garnet depending on where you stand. The greens run in two registers: a soft sage in the guard stripes and spandrel leaves, and a deeper olive green in the medallion rosette and the vine work. Gold appears in controlled doses, in the inner cartouche of the medallion, in scattered star blossoms across the field, and along the thin outlines of the border. Small touches of blush peach and pale blue sit in the corner palmettes and border flowers. On warm floors the red reads warmer, and under cooler daylight the ivory ground gains a hint of green.
