This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Pakistan to a classic Tabriz drawing, with a wool pile on a cotton foundation and a knot count of approximately 200 per square inch. At 9' x 12'3" it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat table without crowding the walls, and the weight and handle in person are exactly what that knot count promises: firm, dense and flat lying. The rose red field, ink black borders and cool ice blue corner work give it a formal look that still reads warm in lamplight. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Tabriz formula: a lobed central medallion with a small rosette at its heart, a slim pendant finial at each end, and four large spandrels filling the corners of the field. What lifts it above the usual copy is the field itself, which is not left open but filled edge to edge with an all over scroll of curved vines, palmettes, serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes, each blossom outlined so it stands clear of the ground. The corner spandrels carry their own dense arabesque in a different palette, so the corners read as separate panels rather than a repeat of the medallion. The main border runs a slow procession of large palmettes and cloud band leaves connected by a thin vine, framed on both sides by ivory guard stripes of small flower heads. Curved line drawing at this density is the harder discipline in weaving, and the medallion outlines here stay smooth and unbroken all the way around.

A Rose Red Field Against Ink Black Borders

The field is a deep rose red, cooler and pinker than a brick or tomato red, which is what keeps this piece from looking heavy at 9' x 12'3". Against it, the main border is an ink black so dark it reads almost as charcoal until light crosses the pile. The medallion picks up that same black ground and fills it with salmon pink blossoms, pale sage leaves and touches of cream. The four spandrels are the surprise: a soft ice blue shading toward gray green, a genuinely unusual choice next to rose red and one that cools the whole composition. Scattered through the field are small notes of navy, steel blue, sage green, apricot and ivory, while the guard stripes hold a clean cream that outlines every border edge. Seen from the side the pile shows the usual light and dark shift of good wool, which is depth of dye rather than any unevenness.

Weaving Quality and Where It Was Made

This rug was made in Pakistan, where workshops have spent decades weaving the great classical city designs on cotton warps with hand spun wool, and the best of that output competes directly on drawing and knot count. Approximately 200 knots per square inch is well above the commercial grade for a room size piece and is what allows the fine vine work and the crisp outlining you see in the field. The finishing supports it: tight selvedges, a low even clip and heavy cotton fringe tied off cleanly at both ends. It has never been on a floor, so the pile is at full height with no traffic lanes and no fade.
