6' x 9' Persian Tribal Rug | Wool | Gray and Brown

A wool rug knotted by hand in Persia in the 1960s, measuring Width: 6' x Length: 9' and rectangular in shape. The pile has worn low, and the drawing now reads as a faint tracery of brown and charcoal across a gray ground rather than as a sharp, high-contrast pattern. Seen from across a room it is close to a solid neutral with texture; up close the full tribal plan is still legible, line by line.

The design

The field is laid out as a large open diamond, its outline running corner to corner and leaving four broad spandrels at the edges. Inside and out, the ground is filled with a repeating lattice of small rosettes, hooked boteh forms and paired leaf shapes, the tribal all-over drawing that village looms work from memory rather than from a cartoon. A small stepped medallion sits at the centre of the field with a pendant above and below it. The main border carries widely spaced star rosettes and angular palmettes, flanked by narrow guard stripes of dotted vine, and the whole scheme is slightly off-square where the weaver adjusted the repeat to meet the end.

The colour

The ground is a pale warm gray, closer to oatmeal in the worn passages and to mushroom where the pile holds its depth. The drawing is done in brown that ranges from milky taupe to a dark walnut in the outlines, with the darkest knots reading almost as charcoal gray against the field. Two quieter notes survive the fading: a rose pink in the central medallion and its pendant, and a thin pale sage in a few of the leaf forms, both visible in the close photographs and both easy to miss at standing height.

The making

Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with the low pile letting the ridged structure show through on the face and the back reading as a clear, even grid of knots. The ends keep their plain gray fringe and the sides are overcast. Woven in the 1960s, it falls among the vintage pieces made before 1970, and at Width: 6' x Length: 9' it sits in the 4x6 to 6x9 range alongside the rest of our hand-knotted stock.
