7'9" x 12'9" Persian Kerman Rug | Open Light Grey Field with Corner Bouquets | Excellent Condition
Most Kerman weavings fill every inch of the field. This one does the opposite, and that is exactly why it is worth looking at twice. A single oval medallion of roses floats in the middle of a wide, quiet light grey field, two bouquets sit in opposing corners, and the scrolling border is drawn in tone on tone so the eye keeps returning to the open ground. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted a knot at a time, with the soft lustre that good Kerman fleece keeps for decades. At 7'9" x 12'9" it is a true room-size piece, ideal where the furniture layout deserves breathing space rather than competition from the floor. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The close-up medallion and floor detail photographs were taken under warm indoor light and read noticeably pink. The true ground is the light grey shown in the full overhead and angled photographs, with a faint sandy warmth in daylight. The colour shift is in the camera, not in the wool.
Design and Motifs
The centre holds an oval medallion ringed by a thin vine wreath, filled with 8 rose and camellia bouquets arranged around a lattice of small capri blue florets and a pale cartouche at the very middle. Above and below the medallion sit matching pendant rosettes, each a single red bloom inside a scrolled cartouche. Instead of 4 matching spandrels, the weaver placed 2 large naturalistic bouquets on opposite corners of the field, drawn loosely enough that they read almost like painting rather than pattern. The border is the other departure: rather than a heavy framed band with guard stripes, an arabesque of peonies and curling leaves runs in low-contrast rose-beige and ivory, broken at the corners and open along the field, edged only by a fine red outline. It is an unusual layout for the town and gives the rug a quiet, almost Art Deco balance.
Light Grey Ground with Red and Capri Blue Accents
The field is a soft light grey that warms toward sand or greige depending on the light, and because roughly two thirds of the surface is left plain, that tone sets the character of the whole rug. The border scrolls are woven in close relatives of the ground, a dusty rose-beige and a chalky ivory, so they register as texture rather than as a frame. Against that calm, the bouquets carry the full palette: deep madder red roses, ivory and cream blossoms, and dark green leaves with slender stems. The only cool note is the capri blue lattice inside the medallion, small crosses and four-petal florets that pull the eye straight to the centre. It is a restrained scheme that sits well with warm woods, cream upholstery and grey plaster walls, and it hides everyday traffic better than a red field would.
Kerman Weaving and the Quality of This Piece
Kerman sits in the southeast of Persia and has supplied the export trade with its most painterly floral work for well over a century, usually pictorial garden borders and dense allover rose fields. The town's real advantage is its wool, a long-staple fleece that takes dye cleanly and polishes with use, and its tradition of drawing from a full-scale cartoon, which is what allows curved vines and shaded petals to stay true across 12 feet. Here the drawing is precise where it counts, in the medallion wreath and the corner sprays, while the weaver trusted the open ground to do the rest. The back shows an even, regular knot line on a cotton foundation with no bulges or pulls, the pile stands at a full 3/8" throughout, and the ends and sides are sound, which is why the condition is graded excellent. Among large Persian rugs in the 8x13 range, an open-field Kerman in this palette is genuinely hard to find.
