This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug measuring 7'9" x 9'9", woven in wool on a cotton foundation at roughly 200 knots per square inch. That is a genuinely dense weave for a room-size piece, and you can feel it: the pile is tightly packed, the back is fine and even, and the drawing holds its detail down to individual flower centers no bigger than a fingernail. The field is a deep burgundy, the wide main border is ivory, and the palette between them runs through rose, salmon, sage and soft cream with small black accents that sharpen the whole design. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the stated measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver has used a classic all over floral layout, a repeating lattice of large shaded palmettes, round rosettes and smaller flower sprays linked by a thin golden vine that wanders across the burgundy ground. Along the vertical axis sit tall feathered palmettes drawn in rose and cream, each one mirrored exactly top and bottom, with a slender vase form anchoring each end of the field. The round rosettes alternate between olive and rose grounds, several of them ringed in black so they read as small dark medallions scattered through the field. The ivory main border carries an alternating sequence of upright fan palmettes and paired floral bouquets, framed by narrow guard stripes of connected rosettes and a fine outer meander. At 200 knots per square inch the curved lines stay curved, which is what separates this weave from a coarser version of the same drawing.

A Burgundy Field Against an Ivory Border

The field is a true burgundy, a wine red with enough brown depth in it to stay calm under lamplight rather than going bright or orange. Against it, the flower heads are worked in layered tones: pale blush and dusty rose at the petal tips, deepening through salmon and terracotta toward the centers, with cream and ivory highlights that give each palmette a sense of light falling on it. Leaves and vine work are sage and olive green, cool enough to keep the reds from dominating. The wide main border is a clean ivory, almost white where the wool takes the light, and it lifts the whole rug and makes the burgundy read as rich rather than heavy. Small notes of black inside the rosette centers and the border bouquets act as punctuation. Where It Was Woven and How It Was Made

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that has been weaving classical Oriental floral designs by hand for decades and doing it at a very high standard. Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton warp and weft, then beaten down hard, which is why the back is so tight and the pile so compact. Two hundred knots per square inch places it well above ordinary commercial production and is the reason the fine vine scrolls and multi-tone shading survive at this scale. The wool is good quality and takes dye cleanly, with a soft sheen across the surface that gives the lighter flowers their glow. In an 8x10 room size it suits a living room seating group or a dining table, and among 8x10 area rugs this level of knot density is uncommon at the price.
