This 7'9" x 10' hand-knotted rug lays a traditional all-over floral drawing across a soft beige ground and frames it in deep red, a formula that reads as formal from the doorway and as detailed as a sampler once you stand over it. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at approximately 200 knots per square inch, which is a genuinely fine weave for a room-size piece and the reason the vine scrolls keep their curves instead of stepping into angles. Condition is excellent: full even pile from end to end, straight sides, flat-woven ends and the original ivory fringe. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is drawn as a continuous lattice of thin scrolling vines that turn back on themselves, each turn ending in a large curled and serrated leaf, a split palmette or an open rosette. The repeat is balanced rather than mirrored, so the eye keeps moving instead of locking onto one point, which is exactly what you want from an all-over floral rug that has to sit under furniture. The main border runs a red ground with an alternating rhythm of upright palmettes and smaller blossom clusters connected by a fine stem line. Inside and outside it, narrow sage green guard bands carry a running vine of tiny 4 petal flowers, and a slim lavender pinstripe separates the guard from the field so the red never bleeds into the beige. The field is a warm beige that leans toward camel and soft gold where the light rakes across the pile, and cools to a pale sand tone when you view it from the other end, the usual wool abrash you get from a hand-knotted pile. Against that ground the vines are drawn in olive and sage, outlined in a dark chocolate brown that gives the leaves their crispness, while the flower heads are picked out in ivory, pale lavender, dusty rose, apricot and a clear mustard gold.
