Design and Motifs

The field carries a full all-over floral composition with no central medallion, built on a thin diamond lattice of burgundy vine that repeats from selvage to selvage. Inside each lattice compartment sits a large layered rosette or palmette, surrounded by serrated leaves, curling tendrils and tiny 8 petal blossoms drawn only a few knots wide. Small lozenge cartouches punctuate the long axis, each one filled with its own miniature flower grid, and the drawing mirrors cleanly across the center line so the pattern reads as one continuous garden rather than a repeated stamp. The main border is the piece's signature: a procession of palm trees, flowering shrubs and cross-hatched pineapple forms alternating along an olive ground, a drawing tradition inherited from the great 19th century north Indian workshops. Four narrower guard bands of reciprocating leaf and blossom frame it on both sides, with the innermost stripe in a deeper burgundy that pulls the eye back toward the field.

The Beige, Olive and Burgundy Palette

The ground is a warm beige that leans toward ivory in the open areas and toward sand where the pile catches light, giving the field a gentle luminosity rather than a flat cream. Over that, the vinework is drawn in a deep burgundy that reads almost wine at the outline and softens to rose where the strands are thinner. The palmettes are worked in aubergine, muted sage green, antique gold and a smoky taupe, so no single flower dominates and the field stays quiet from across the room. The main border shifts to a soft olive green with an almost bronze cast, its palm trees and shrubs outlined again in burgundy and filled with old gold and pale ivory. Corner spandrel bands and the outer edge pick up a mushroom brown that keeps the frame grounded. The pile is good hand-spun wool, clipped at a medium height so it has body underfoot while still letting the fine drawing show, and the selvages are hand-overcast with the fringe knotted directly from the cotton warps.
