7' x 10'11" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Beige Field with Salmon Rose Medallion | Excellent Condition
This is the quiet, light-ground version of a classic city design, and it is the harder one to find. Measuring 7' x 10'11", the rug carries a single salmon rose medallion on an almost bare ivory-beige field, with four small floral sprays set above and below it and nothing else competing for attention. The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, clipped low and even, with the slight sheen across the open ground that only good Tabriz wool gives. Condition is excellent, the ends and sides are original, and the piece ships with our certificate of authenticity. For a room that needs a real persian tabriz rug without a dark or heavy floor, this is the one to look at, and it sits in the most usable corner of our 7x10 Persian rugs range.
Please Note About the Photographs:
One of the floor photographs shows a soft fold line running across the open field. That is a storage crease from the rug being folded on the pallet, not wear, not fade and not damage. It relaxes out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is built around one lobed diamond medallion in the center, outlined in turquoise with a stepped, serrated edge, and finished top and bottom with a small teal pendant and bud finial. Inside the medallion the weaver worked a tight nest of 8 petal rosettes, star flowers, feathered leaves and a pale celadon cartouche at the very center holding a single apricot bloom. The field around it is deliberately left open, broken only by 4 loose bouquets of carnation, rosette and lily-of-the-valley sprigs, each one drawn slightly differently rather than mirrored exactly. Three bands make up the border system: a brick red main border of scrolling vine and reciprocal palmettes, an inner guard of small blossom heads on ivory, and a fine barber-pole stripe that separates the two. A row of arched floral pendants runs along the inside edge of the field at both ends, a detail Tabriz workshops use to frame an open ground and keep it from looking empty.
The Beige, Salmon and Teal Palette
The field reads as a warm beige, closer to undyed wool and ivory than to white, and it shifts slightly from cream to sand depending on where the light falls across the pile. Against it the medallion sits in a soft salmon rose, almost a dusty pink, ringed in a clear turquoise blue that is the brightest note in the rug. The main border is a muted brick red with a rust cast, cooled by sage and pine green leafwork, and the smaller flowers pick up burgundy, deep aubergine, mustard gold, ivory and a chalky sky blue. There is no hard black and no high contrast anywhere, which is why the rug works so easily with oak floors, pale plaster walls and linen upholstery. If you are shopping a light floor specifically, this piece belongs with the beige and ivory Persian rugs rather than the saturated reds and navies.
Tabriz: The Town and the Weave
Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been the commercial and design capital of Persian weaving for centuries, the town that sent its cartoons and its master weavers out to the surrounding villages. Tabriz counts fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 in, and workshops there are the only ones that routinely push the system to its upper limits. The back photograph of this rug shows what that tradition produces at the workshop level: straight, even rows, a firm cotton foundation with no slack, and a knot small enough to carry the curved vine and serrated medallion edge cleanly rather than stepping them. The wool is spun tightly and clipped short, which is how the open beige ground stays flat and uniform over nearly 11 feet of length without visible abrash or banding, and it is the main reason a light-field Tabriz like this one survives decades of use looking composed.
