8'1" x 10'1" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Gold All-Over Floral Field with Dark Green Border | New, Low Pile
This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in the Ziegler manner, woven in wool on a cotton foundation and finished at 8'1" x 10'1". The whole field is a warm gold, drawn with a continuous lattice of vines, rosettes and palmettes, and the whole thing is held inside one deep green main border with a pale gold outer band and a narrow floral guard on either side. The pile has been clipped low, which is what gives the drawing its flat, graphic clarity and lets the small black and rust outlines read sharply against the gold. It is new, never used, and in perfect condition, with even clean ivory fringe at both ends. A certificate of authenticity accompanies the rug, confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece rather than a machine-made or tufted reproduction. At this footprint it is one of the most usable sizes we sell, and you can see the full range of comparable pieces on our 8x10 Oriental rugs page.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The pile on this rug sits low by design. Weavers shearing in the Ziegler style cut the wool down deliberately so the drawing stays crisp and the rug feels settled rather than plush. In the close-up photographs that low clip shows the knot heads clearly and can look like age, but this rug is new and never used. The gold ground also shifts between a deeper honey and a lighter wheat depending on the angle of the light, exactly as it does in the full-length and angled shots above.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the design is a true all-over floral design, a loose network of thin brown vines that split, curl and rejoin across the whole field, carrying a different flower at almost every junction. Count what is actually growing on it and you get open 8 petal rosettes in ivory and rust, broad fan-shaped palmettes in dark green, small 6 petal blossoms in teal and orange, star flowers, serrated leaves and, lower in the field, a drawn flower vase motif with little checkered panels inside it. The drawing is mirrored across the long axis rather than repeated mechanically, so the two halves answer each other without ever looking stamped. The main border runs a reciprocal procession of gold vine arms and rust rosettes on the dark ground, turning cleanly at all 4 corners, and the outer band repeats a simple leaf and bud chain that keeps the gold of the field running right out to the fringe. It is a generous, relaxed pattern, the sort that reads as texture from standing height and as botany when you sit down on the floor with it.
A Gold Field Framed in Deep Green
Gold is the whole story of this rug, and it is a soft, antique-looking gold rather than a brassy yellow, closer to dry wheat and honey than to butter. Because the wool takes light differently along the lay of the pile, the field moves between pale straw and deeper amber as you walk around it, which is why the full-length photographs look lighter than the detail shots. Against that ground the main border is a dark, saturated green that in some light tips toward teal and almost reads as navy, giving the rug the strong frame it needs at this size. Inside the pattern the secondary palette is narrow and controlled: rust and terracotta in the big rosettes, warm brown in the vine lines, olive and sage in the leaves, a soft orange in the smaller buds, ivory and beige for the flower outlines, and fine black detailing that sharpens the dark green blossoms. If you are furnishing around warm woods, cream upholstery and blue accents, this sits in the middle of the room and pulls all of it together. Made in Pakistan in the Ziegler Tradition
The Ziegler name comes from the European trading house that, in the late 19th century, commissioned large-scale floral room-size weavings specifically for Western interiors, softening the palette and opening up the drawing so the rugs would suit grand houses abroad. That design language never went away, and today Pakistan is one of the strongest centers in the world for this kind of hand-knotted work. Weavers there work row by row from a paper plan, knotting wool pile onto a cotton warp and weft, then wash, shear and stretch the finished piece by hand. Turn this rug over, as in the folded-corner photographs, and you can see what that discipline produces: a tight, regular back with the pattern legible knot for knot, straight selvedges, and no slack or wander in the weave over 10 feet of length. The wool is well spun and takes the dyes evenly, and the low clip means the pile will not crush or shade the way a tall plush pile does under furniture. This is a new rug, never on a floor, ready to go straight into a room and stay there for decades.
