This is a classic village Heriz in the proportion most American rooms are built for: 8'1" x 11'6", wide enough to carry a sofa group on all four legs and long enough to run the length of a dining table with chairs pulled back. The wool is heavy and lustrous, the pile stands full across the field, and the drawing has the confident straight-line character that separates a real northwest Persian weave from a copy of one. Design and Motifs

The center holds a large 8 lobed navy medallion, outlined twice in light blue and ivory so it reads clean from across a room, with a small rosette at its heart and rows of stylized blossoms filling each lobe. Above and below it hang serrated pendants with curling cloud-band arms, and the red field around them is packed with angular leaves, hooked vines and palmettes drawn in straight segments rather than curves, which is exactly how the villages of this district draw. The 4 corners carry ivory spandrels filled with the same leaf and blossom vocabulary, and the main border alternates navy panels of large rosettes and split palmettes between narrow rose and ivory guard stripes. It is a balanced, symmetrical layout that belongs with the best geometric Persian rugs.

Color Palette

The field is a warm brick red that shifts between terracotta and a deeper rust depending on where the light falls, with the gentle horizontal variation of hand-dyed wool visible across the open ground. Against it, the medallion and the main border read a deep inky navy, close to black at the outlines, which gives the whole rug its weight. Light sky blue is used sparingly but decisively, tracing the medallion outline, the pendants and scattered leaf tips, and that single cool note keeps the red from going heavy. Ivory appears in the 4 corner spandrels, the guard stripes and the tiny flower heads, and soft rose, salmon pink, olive green and a few strokes of camel gold fill in the smaller blossoms. Sitting in the red and rust family with strong navy and ivory contrast, it works on wood floors and against cream, olive or charcoal walls.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Heriz is a group of weaving villages east of Tabriz, on the slopes below Mount Sabalan in northwest Persia. The water there is mineral-rich and the local sheep grow a famously tough, springy fleece, which is why Heriz rugs wear for generations under real foot traffic while finer city pieces would thin out. Weavers work from memory on a cotton foundation rather than from a full cartoon, which is why the drawing is angular, the medallion stepped and the corners squared off. Village Heriz weaving is generally coarser than workshop city work, and that is the point: a thick wool pile packed onto a strong cotton warp is what makes these rugs durable. On this piece the knotting is even, the selvedges are intact, the ends are secure and the pile is full from border to border.
