8'10" x 11'4" Ziegler Chobi Oriental Rug | Neutral Autumn Palette | Fine Dense Weave, Brand New

This 8'10" x 11'4" Ziegler Chobi is a brand new, never used piece hand-knotted in Peshawar from hand-spun natural wool on a cotton foundation, and it is noticeably finer and denser than the average Chobi you will find at this size. The field reads as warm camel brown, quietly shaded from one row of knots to the next, with a wide gray-lilac border that cools the whole thing down. It is one of the easiest large rugs to live with: soft enough underfoot to sit on, tight enough in the weave to hold its drawing crisply, and neutral enough that it will not argue with furniture you already own. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made reproduction.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Ziegler all over floral design: a lattice of thick curling vines that meet at large 8 petal rosettes, each rosette given an ivory or gold center ringed in deep indigo petals. Between them sit smaller star flowers, serrated leaves and split palmettes, all drawn at generous scale so the pattern stays legible from across a room rather than dissolving into busy texture. Count the rosettes across the field and you get a steady 4 across the width, repeating up the length in staggered rows, which is what gives the rug its calm rhythm. The border system is three deep: a slim vine and flower guard stripe on either side of a broad main border filled with alternating palmettes and rosettes, finished with a plain brown outer band and ivory cotton fringe at both ends. Corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly instead of being cut off, a small detail that separates a carefully drawn cartoon from a rushed one.

A Neutral Autumn Palette of Camel, Gray and Indigo

The color story here is entirely muted and entirely natural. The field is a camel brown with a soft rust undertone that shifts toward tan or toward gray depending on where the light falls, the result of hand-spun wool taking dye unevenly in the best possible way. Over that run vines in pale gray-green and old ivory, rosette centers in cream and soft gold, and petal rings in a dusty indigo blue that is the only saturated note in the rug. The main border drops the warmth and goes to a smoky gray-lavender, which frames the field the way a matte frames a photograph, while the guard stripes pull the beige and blue back out to the edge. Seen from one direction the rug reads warm and sandy, from the other it reads cool and gray, so it sits comfortably with both white oak and walnut, with linen upholstery and with charcoal. There is no black, no bright red and no harsh white anywhere in it.

Peshawar Weaving and the Ziegler Chobi Tradition

Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is where the Ziegler Chobi style is woven best. Chobi comes from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye recipes used for these colors, and the look depends on hand-spun wool rather than machine-spun yarn, which is what creates the gentle striation across the field. This piece is a finer grade than standard production: the knots are smaller, the rows are packed tighter and the pile has been clipped low, so the vine work and the petal outlines stay sharp instead of blurring. Turn it over, as in the back photograph, and the pattern is legible knot for knot on the reverse, which is the honest test of density in a hand-knotted rug. At 8'10" x 11'4" it covers a standard 9x11 footprint with the wool weight and even handle of a rug built to take decades of traffic, and at this dense a weave it will show almost no shedding after the first few weeks.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
