8'10" x 11'9" Persian Rug | Light Grayish Blue Floral Field with Birds | Excellent Condition

A pale, cool field is rare in a formal Persian room size, and that is the first thing you notice about this rug. The ground reads as a soft grayish blue, almost the color of a winter sky, and every flowering branch, songbird and rosette garland sits on it with unusual clarity. The pile is fine wool knotted on a cotton foundation, the handle is supple, and the surface is even from selvage to selvage with no low spots or repairs. At 8'10" x 11'9" it lands squarely in the most useful large format, so it works where most buyers shop 9x12 Persian rugs for a main seating area or a full dining table. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted in Persia.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is curvilinear throughout and drawn with a light hand rather than a heavy one. A small lobed medallion in brick red sits at center, filled with a navy palmette and a pair of ivory shell forms, and it is ringed by loose garlands of 6 petal salmon rosettes that float free of the medallion instead of being tied to it. Above and below, twin cartouche shaped pendants in red and navy anchor the vertical axis, and each of the 4 corners carries a large scrolling arabesque cradling a spray of flowers. Between them the field fills with blossoming branches, tulip buds, olive green leafy stems and, in the detail photograph, songbirds perched on the branches at intervals down both sides. The border system is unusually deep for a piece this size: an ivory band worked with a blue scrolling vine, a broad navy strip with a scalloped red edge, narrow serrated guard stripes, and a wide brick red main border of palmettes, ivory blossoms and blue leaf forms that frames the whole composition.

A Light Grayish Blue Palette with Brick Red and Ivory

The field color is the reason to buy this rug. It is a muted, dusty light blue with a gray cast, quiet enough to sit under gray, cream, taupe or pale wood without fighting anything in the room, and far easier to decorate around than the classic red ground. Against it the palette is warm but restrained: a soft brick red in the medallion, pendants and main border, a strong navy in the scrolling vine and in the flower centers, salmon pink and blush in the rosette garlands, clean ivory in the inner frame and the blossom heads, and olive to sage green in the leaves and stems. Small touches of pale gold and deep aubergine appear in the border palmettes. The wool takes light well, so the blue shifts between a cooler steel tone and a softer powder blue as you walk around the rug, and the reds read closer to rose than to crimson in daylight.

Persian Weaving and Quality

This is workshop weaving in the classical Persian city tradition, made in Persia on a cotton warp and weft with a hand-spun wool pile. The back photograph shows straight, regular rows of knots with crisp outlines, which is what allows the curved vines, the bird forms and the tiny ivory blossoms to hold their shape rather than turning into steps. Work of this kind is drawn on a cartoon and followed knot by knot by a trained weaver, and the finishing shows the same discipline: flat selvages, an even low pile and clean cotton fringe at both ends. If you are weighing this against a machine-made lookalike or a generic import, the difference is exactly what the reverse shows, and it is also the practical line between true Persian rugs and Oriental rugs in general. Kept out of harsh direct sun and rotated once a year, a rug built this way stays in service for generations.
