Design and Motifs

The field is laid out as a diamond lattice of garden panels, the old Tabriz formula in which each compartment holds its own small planting: tulips, carnations, lilies, cypress sprigs and 8 petal rosettes, no two neighboring panels repeating the same arrangement. At the center sits a round rosette medallion ringed by a beaded circle and framed by scrolling arabesques and palmettes, the one element that resolves the lattice into a single point rather than an endless repeat. Because the rug is round, the lattice breaks against a circular framing band and the panels shorten gradually toward the edge, which is where the drafting skill shows. The main border runs a continuous vine of palmettes and serrated leaves between narrow floral guard stripes that follow the curve without a visible seam.

A Gold Field With Earthy Accents

The overall reading is gold: a warm ivory to honey ground that shifts toward tan and soft camel across the border, with the wool taking light differently as you walk around the circle. Against that ground the drawing is picked out in burgundy and brick red outlines, olive and sage green leaves, and small soft blue highlights that appear inside flower heads and in the shading of alternating lattice panels.
