8'3" x 10'2" Chinese Silk Rug | Green Multi Garden Panel Box Design | Brand New, Never Used
This is a hand-knotted pure silk rug measuring 8'3" x 10'2", woven in China in the classic garden panel layout that collectors also call a box or kheshti design. The field is divided into 25 compartments, each one drawn with its own vase, tree or medallion, and the whole thing is framed by a deep olive border of linked rosettes. Silk pile over a cotton foundation gives it the shifting light you can see between the photographs: the same panel reads sage from one end of the room and pale gold from the other. It is brand new and has never been used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity from Rugs.net confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made or power-loomed copy.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first two images show the truest color. The overhead shots taken under direct light lift the natural sheen of the silk and make the greens look considerably paler and the terracotta panels softer than they are in normal room light. This is the silk reflecting the flash, not fading, bleaching or wear.
Design and Motifs
The field is a 5 by 5 grid of garden compartments, each outlined by a narrow ivory and aqua ribbon so the panels read as separate little pictures rather than one repeating pattern. Some boxes hold an 8 petal rosette medallion floating on a plain ground, others a flowering urn with a spray of blossom rising out of it, and several are drawn as niche-shaped arches sheltering a cypress or a weeping willow. The close-up photograph shows one panel with 2 facing birds perched either side of a central stem, a detail the weaver repeated only in a handful of boxes across the field. The main border carries alternating ivory cartouches and shield-shaped rosettes on olive green, flanked by 4 guard stripes of running vine and a fine reciprocal sawtooth that keeps the outer edge crisp. All 4 corners are resolved cleanly, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon rather than an improvised weave.
A Green and Multi Color Palette Built on Silk Sheen
Green carries this rug. The border is a deep olive, the panel grounds run from soft celadon through apple and sage to a mossier tone, and the effect is that the field breathes instead of repeating flatly. Against that green the weaver set warm terracotta and rust boxes at intervals, a scatter of cream and ivory panels, and 4 or 5 aqua blue niches that jump forward when the light hits them. The drawing inside each compartment is picked out in gold, rose, ecru and charcoal, with tiny points of navy in the border rosettes. Because the pile is silk, every color shows 2 values depending on where you stand, so the same aqua panel can look pale mint from one direction and a clear turquoise from the other. The ivory fringe and the cream outer guard band frame the whole palette and keep the greens from reading heavy.
Woven in China: Fine Silk Workshop Quality
China's workshops have been weaving fine silk rugs for export for decades, and the better ones work to a knot count that most wool weaving never attempts, because silk is thin enough to allow it. The ruler photograph shows the scale of the knotting along the edge: tight, even rows with no drift, small enough that the curved arches and thin vine stems hold their line instead of stepping. Both ends finish in hand-tied silk fringe and the selvedges are wrapped clean. At 8'3" x 10'2" this sits in the standard 8x10 rug footprint, and like most fine silk rugs it is best kept out of heavy traffic lanes so the pile keeps its luster. Brand new, never walked on, and still holding the crisp handle of a rug straight off the loom.
