8'5" x 11'4" Persian Kerman Rug | Wool | Red and Navy
A hand-knotted rectangular carpet from Persia, 8'5" x 11'4", with a wool pile. Almost the whole field is left open in a deep crimson red, with a single pale green medallion floating at the centre and leafy corner pieces drawn in at the four corners. A wide navy border carries the pattern around the outside, and the ends finish in plain ivory fringe.
Design
The Kerman drawing here depends on empty space. The medallion is an eight-lobed rosette with a star centre, ringed by palmettes and small feathered leaves, and it hangs from a short pendant at each end with a pair of upright cartouches to either side. Sprays of naturalistic flowers, carnations, roses and small buds on thin stems, drift out onto the red ground without covering it. The corner spandrels are cut in a scalloped line and filled with flowering vine on a light ground, so the open field reads as a shaped panel rather than a plain rectangle. The main border runs a repeat of curled boteh and large flower heads on navy, held between an ivory guard stripe outside and a narrow reciprocating stripe inside.
Colour
The field is a saturated red that leans toward raspberry where the light rakes across the pile, and it makes up most of what you see. Against it the medallion is a soft green, close to celadon, with the drawing inside it picked out in rose pink, dark navy and a brighter light blue. The spandrels are a pale pistachio green, the guard stripes and fringe an ivory and beige, and the border ground is the darkest note in the rug. Small touches of saffron and mid green appear in the border flowers.
Making
Hand-knotted in wool, with a wool fringe left at both ends. The back, visible where the corner is turned in the photographs, shows an even, clearly defined knot and the same colours reading through from the face. The table dates it to the 1980s, which places it among semi-antique pieces, and it is recorded in perfect condition, with the pile standing full across the open field and the selvedges and ends intact.
