8'5" x 11'5" Persian Heriz Rug | Wool | Brick Red and Navy
A room-size Heriz knotted by hand in Persia, 8'5" x 11'5" and rectangular, with a natural wool pile. At a glance it reads as brick red: a broad red field carrying a navy star medallion, ivory corner spandrels and a deep navy main border. The pile is low in places, particularly in the field below the medallion, which lets the drawing sit flat and clear rather than standing proud.
Design
The centre is an eight-pointed navy medallion with long stepped pendants above and below, built around an apricot and green rosette with rows of small navy hearts and split palmettes inside it. Four square panels, ivory outlined with green latch-hook figures, sit in the corners of the medallion. The red field around it is filled with large angular palmettes, serrated leaves and hooked vine ends, all drawn in straight lines and steps rather than curves. Ivory spandrels close off the four corners with the same angular foliage. The main border runs rosettes and octagonal flowerheads on navy, linked by a tendril, flanked by a narrow ivory and black barbed stripe on the inner side and a gold-ground vine stripe on the outer.
Colour
The field is a brick red that shifts towards a lighter salmon in the worn passages and towards a cooler madder tone at the ends. Against it the navy of the medallion and border is close to black in the shadowed photographs and opens to indigo in the flatter light. Ivory does the outlining work throughout, separating red from navy at every edge and filling the spandrels outright, while a dry olive green appears in the leaves, the medallion panels and the small rosettes. Apricot and a soft salmon pink come through in the medallion centre and the outer guard stripe.
Making
Hand-knotted in wool on a foundation that remains firm, with an ivory fringe at both ends and the sides intact in the photographs. The table dates it to the 1980s, placing it in the semi-antique range, and records the condition as very good with slight wear. Weavers in the Heriz district work from a coarse, large-scale grid, which is why the flowers and leaves here break into steps and angles instead of curving, and why a rug of this size holds its pattern legibly across the whole floor.
