8'5" x 9'9" Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | Washed Out Green & Gold All Over Trellis | Brand New

This is a brand new, never used Chobi Ziegler Oriental rug, hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun natural wool and finished with the long mineral wash that gives the Chobi group its faded, already-lived-in surface. At 8'5" x 9'9" it sits close to square, which makes it one of the easier pieces to center under a seating group or a table in a room that is not a clean rectangle, and it reads as a quiet neutral rather than a statement piece. The pile is low and dense, the handle is supple, and the back photo shows an even cotton foundation with clean, tight rows. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted, and this one is a good entry point for buyers comparing 8x10 Oriental rugs in a soft, decorator-friendly palette.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Ziegler drawing: a continuous all over trellis of broad hexagonal and lozenge compartments, each one holding a single flattened rosette with a small notched center. There is no medallion and no strong directional axis, so the pattern repeats calmly in every direction and the rug can be rotated without the design looking wrong. The vine lines that form the lattice are drawn wide and slightly irregular by hand, which keeps the geometry from feeling printed. Framing the field is a narrow inner guard and a main border filled with alternating octagonal rosettes and stepped key meanders, with the corners resolved in the honest village manner rather than forced into perfect symmetry. The close-up images show how the smaller interior devices, little hooks, combs and 4 petal flowers, sit inside the larger shapes and give the surface detail when you stand over it.

A Washed Out Green and Gold Palette

Color is the whole point of this piece. The ground is a pale washed out green that moves between soft sage and dusty celadon depending on the light, and the lattice and rosettes are worked in a warm gold that leans toward apricot and biscuit where the wash has pulled the dye back the most. Border and outer bands repeat the same two tones in reverse, gold field with green drawing, so the frame stays light instead of closing the rug in with a dark edge. Scattered through the field are faint blush and putty passages, natural abrash from hand-spun wool and uneven dye uptake, which is what keeps a pastel rug from looking flat. There is no black and no saturated red anywhere, so the rug sits easily with oak and walnut floors, greys, creams, linen upholstery and pale plaster walls. The sheen in the raking shots is the natural luster of the wool rather than silk.

Chobi Peshawar Weaving and Quality

Chobi, from the word for wood, describes rugs dyed with plant and mineral dyestuffs and then washed to a muted tone, and the Ziegler drawing is the pattern family these workshops are best known for. The weaving is done in Afghanistan on cotton warps by weavers working from the Peshawar trade tradition, using the tough highland wool of the region, which is high in lanolin and takes a wash without going dry or brittle. Knot count here is moderate by design: the interest is in the wool, the dye and the clarity of the drawing rather than in fineness, and the moderate density is exactly why this kind of rug wears well in a busy room. Selvages are flat and tightly overcast, the ends are finished with short hand-tied fringe, and the rug lies flat with no curl or buckle. Among contemporary hand-knotted Oriental rugs, Chobi Ziegler production is some of the most consistent work being made today, and this example is in perfect condition with full pile throughout.
