8'6" x 11'5" Berry Red Wool and Silk Rug | Persian Floral Medallion Design | Hand-Knotted, Never Used
This is a full 8'6" x 11'5" hand-knotted Oriental rug in wool with silk, built on the classical central medallion layout and drawn with the kind of curved, unbroken line that only a tight weave allows. The field is a deep berry red, the main border is black, and the medallion and spandrels are worked in sage green, ivory and soft gold, so the piece reads formal without going dark. The pile is unwalked, the corners are square, and the silk highlights still throw their original sheen when the light crosses them, which is what you expect from a rug that has never been on a floor. The ivory cotton fringe and side finishes are untouched. It ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the materials, construction and origin, and at 102" x 137" it covers a 9x12 footprint with room to float furniture rather than crowd it.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a large starburst medallion: a small rosette core inside concentric rings of arabesque tracery, then a ring of pointed lobes that radiate outward like petals, each one filled with fine scrollwork rather than left flat. Long pendants drop from the top and bottom of the medallion into the field, and the 4 corners carry matching spandrels that repeat the same tracery on a pale ground, so the eye reads the layout instantly from a standing position. Around all of that the field is filled with a dense all over floral: Shah Abbasi style palmettes, multi petal rosettes, carnation heads and cypress shaped leaf forms, all linked by thin scrolling vines that keep the drawing moving instead of static. The black main border runs a continuous floral meander of large blossoms and curling leaves, flanked by sage green guard stripes and several hairline stripes in ivory, red and dark blue green, visible clearly in the angled photograph. Nothing in the drawing is repeated by rote; the flower heads change type and direction across the field, which is the mark of a design that was actually followed from a full cartoon.
Berry Red, Black and Sage Green Colors
The field color is a berry red with a cool, slightly wine leaning cast rather than a hot orange red, and it shifts gently in tone as the pile turns, going a shade deeper where the nap runs away from the light. Against it the black border is genuinely black, not charcoal, which gives the rug a hard, clean frame and makes the sage green sing. That green is the real story: a soft celadon to olive sage that fills the medallion body, the corner spandrels and the wide guard stripes, and it is the color that keeps this piece from feeling like a standard red and navy formula. Ivory and cream carry most of the flower heads, with antique gold in the medallion rings and pendants, and small touches of dusty rose, teal blue and deep moss inside individual blossom centers and leaves. The silk in the pile takes dye differently from the wool, so the highlights in the medallion and the larger palmettes flash lighter or darker depending on where you stand. If you are working around existing furniture, it sits comfortably with other red and burgundy rugs and with warm woods, brass and cream upholstery.
Made in China, Woven in the Classical Design Tradition
This rug was hand-knotted in China, where workshops have spent decades weaving the classical floral medallion repertoire on cotton foundations with wool and silk pile, and the best of that output is drawn and finished to a genuinely high standard. You can see the evidence in the photographs: straight, even selvedges, a flat back with no bowing, and a knot count fine enough to carry the hairline outlines around each petal and each vine, which a coarse weave simply cannot hold. The silk is used selectively as highlight rather than across the whole field, a deliberate choice that puts the shine where the design wants emphasis while keeping the wool pile durable enough for real traffic. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is then clipped level, so the surface sits low and crisp instead of shaggy. For buyers shopping the 9x12 rug size, this one gives you a formal, fully drawn medallion piece in a color pairing that is much harder to find than the usual red and ivory, and it is brand new, so the entire life of the pile is still ahead of it.
