8' x 10' Indian Wool and Silk Rug | Two Tone Cream All-Over Floral Design | Brand New
From across a room this 8' x 10' rug reads as one quiet sheet of cream, and then the light moves and the whole surface comes forward: flowering stems, cone shaped boteh and little rosettes drawn in silk against a wool ground, raised just enough to cast their own shadow. That is what two tone weaving does, and it is the reason a piece this restrained still holds your eye. The pile is wool and silk on a cotton foundation, hand-knotted at a fine weave, and the rug has never been on a floor. It is a sensible choice for anyone shopping 8x10 Oriental rugs who wants pattern without color commitment. Every rug we sell ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming size, materials, hand-knotted construction and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The darker patches and straight creases visible across the upper part of the field in the first few photographs are shadows from our warehouse lighting and fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fade and not damage. The marks relax as soon as the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over design built on slender vertical stems that rise the length of the rug, each one hung with a tall cone shaped boteh filled with a fine lattice of tiny knots, and flanked by five petal blossoms, curling leaves and small clusters of buds. Look closely in the detail photographs and you can see the drawing repeat in staggered rows, mirrored left to right about the center axis, so the pattern stays orderly without becoming mechanical. The border system runs three deep: a wide main band of large rosettes and palmettes linked by a leafy vine, set between narrow guard stripes of alternating flowerheads and reciprocal scrolls, and finished with a plain outer band that frames the whole thing cleanly. Because the pattern is read in texture and sheen rather than in contrasting dyes, the effect is carved relief, closer to damask or tooled plaster than to a conventional floral rug.
A Two Tone Cream Palette
The ground is cream, warm rather than cool, sitting between sand and oatmeal with a faint honey cast where the wool catches the light. Over it the pattern is worked in ivory and pearl white silk, so the vines and blossoms lift a shade brighter than the field while the boteh cones, stippled with hundreds of small knots, hold a slightly deeper beige that shifts toward soft taupe depending on where you stand. The main border sits a half step darker than the field, enough to draw a frame, and the guard stripes come back to near white. Total contrast across the rug is deliberately narrow, which makes it forgiving next to oak, walnut, limestone, linen upholstery and brass, and it is why the surface looks completely different in morning light than it does under lamps at night. The ivory fringe and the plain selvage edge keep the border reading crisp.
Hand-Knotted in India
This is contemporary workshop weaving from northern India, and it deserves to be said plainly: India is where most of the world's best new hand-knotted work is being made today, by weavers trained in classical drawing and working at knot counts that support curved line and fine floral detail. The back, shown in the final close-up, is tight and even, with small clear knots and straight rows, which is what lets the silk pattern hold a crisp edge against the wool ground instead of blurring. The design vocabulary is traditional and the palette is modern, the combination that drives most of the demand for a good Oriental rug today. Wool carries the traffic, silk carries the light, and the 8' x 10' footprint fits a standard living or dining layout without compromise.
