8' x 11' Oriental Rug | Vegetable Dye Brown Field, Green Palmettes | Traditional All-Over Design
This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Pakistan with a hand-spun wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the whole piece is built around vegetable dyes rather than chemical color. The field is a deep tobacco brown carrying an all-over lattice of palmettes and vines in green, cream and rust, framed by a wide antique gold border that lifts the brown out of the room. At 8' x 11' it sits in the most useful of the 8x11 rugs, large enough to carry a sofa group or a six to eight chair dining table without crowding the walls. The pile is clipped low and even, the handle is supple, and the rug is in perfect condition with no wear and no repairs. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is 100% hand-knotted, along with its origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a classic all-over floral composition with no central medallion, so the eye travels the full length of the field instead of stopping in the middle. Rows of 8 petal rosettes and broad serrated palmettes alternate with smaller star flowers and leaf sprays, all tied together by a thin meandering vine that curves between them and keeps the repeat from looking mechanical. The close-up in image 3 shows how the weaver outlined each blossom in cream against the brown ground, a small detail that gives the pattern its crisp edge at a distance. The wide main border carries its own procession of large palmettes and cross-shaped flowerheads with curling vines between them, flanked by 2 narrow guard stripes of running floral buds. The corners resolve cleanly, the pattern turning without being cut short, which is the mark of a weaver working from a well drafted design rather than improvising at the edge.
A Palette of Brown, Green and Antique Gold
Color is the reason to own this rug. The field is a warm earth brown, closer to tobacco and coffee than to chocolate, with the soft tonal variation that only hand-spun wool and natural dye give you, visible as gentle horizontal shifts across the ground. Against that brown the ornament reads in 3 greens: a bright apple green in the leaves, a quieter sage in the smaller flowerheads, and a dusty olive in the vines. Cream and buttery ivory carry the outlines and the flower centers, and small touches of rust and terracotta appear in the border palmettes. The wide border itself is an antique gold that washes toward ivory in places, and the outer stripe returns to brown so the rug is visually closed on all 4 sides. The overall effect is mellow and lamp-friendly, a palette that settles into oak, walnut, leather and warm plaster without competing with them.
Woven in Pakistan: Vegetable Dyes and Hand-Knotted Quality
Pakistan's weaving centers have spent decades producing traditional hand-knotted work in the old village manner, with hand-spun wool, natural dyes from plants and minerals, and knots tied one at a time on an upright loom. This rug is a good example of that output: the back shown in image 5 is tight and regular, the knot rows sit straight, and the cotton warps are evenly spaced with no pulling at the selvage. The wool is lustrous and takes the dye unevenly in the best way, which is what creates the quiet abrash in the field. Low, even clipping shows the pattern clearly while leaving enough pile for a large room to take real traffic, and the fringe is original and untrimmed. For a buyer who wants the look of a traditional workshop design in genuine, lifelong hand-knotted construction, this 8' x 11' is a practical and honest piece.
