13' x 19'4" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Sage Green All Over Floral Field | Burgundy Palmette Border

This is a room-defining piece: 13' x 19'4" of hand-knotted wool in the Jaipur manner, with a soft sage green field of scrolling vinework framed by a wide burgundy border of oversized palmettes. It is a true Oriental rug in the classical sense, drawn from the Mughal court tradition and woven knot by knot on a cotton foundation, with a 3/8" wool pile that already has the low, glossy, slightly washed surface collectors look for. At this scale it belongs with the oversize hand-knotted rugs that anchor a great room or a long formal dining room rather than sit inside one. Design and Motifs

The field carries no medallion at all. Instead it runs an all over floral design of thin arabesque vines that loop from end to end, hung with rosettes, half palmettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small curling cloud-band tendrils. The drawing is deliberately open, so the green ground breathes between the flowers rather than being crowded out. The main border is the showpiece: a deep burgundy ground carrying a slow rhythm of very large radiating rosettes and broad feathered palmettes, connected by a thin vine that turns in tight scrolls at every corner. Two guard borders in olive and gold, each filled with a small running leaf meander, separate the border from the field and from the outer edge. Corner resolution is clean, with the border pattern turning properly instead of being cut off, which is a good sign of an attentive loom.

Sage Green Field and Deep Burgundy Border

The palette is the reason to buy this rug. The ground is a grey-leaning sage green, cool and dusty rather than bright, and it shifts between a paler celadon and a deeper moss depending on where the light falls across the 3/8" pile. Over it the vines and leaves are worked in antique gold, honey, straw and pale ivory, with small blossoms picked out in dusty rose, apricot and terracotta and the occasional leaf in a darker olive or chocolate brown. The main border swings the other way into a saturated wine burgundy, and the big rosettes sitting on it repeat the same golds, olives and roses found in the field, so the two halves of the rug talk to each other. Guard stripes of soft olive and old gold keep the red from hitting the green abruptly. The whole thing has the mellowed, low-contrast look of a washed antique reproduction, which makes it easy to live with next to browns, creams, brass and dark wood.

Jaipur Weaving and Hand-Knotted Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of northern India, and the workshops there built their reputation on reinterpreting Mughal and classical court drawing at a high knot count. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why: the knotting on the reverse is even and tight enough to read every leaf and stem clearly from the back, the wool is well spun and takes dye cleanly, and the selvedges and ivory fringe are original and intact.
