This is a full palace piece, 216 inches long and 144 inches wide, hand-knotted in Jaipur with a fine wool pile on a cotton foundation and never put on a floor. The burgundy field carries an uninterrupted all over floral drawing, and a wide green main border wraps it on all 4 sides, so the rug reads as one continuous composition rather than a medallion layout. At this scale it is the room, and it belongs in the handful of oversize 12 x 18 rugs that can properly seat a long dining table or a double seating group without the furniture spilling onto bare floor. Design and Motifs

The field follows the classic Mughal workshop formula: a lattice of thin curling vines carrying large fan-shaped palmettes, split leaf forms and elongated boteh cartouches filled with small rosettes, all repeating on a staggered grid so the eye keeps moving. The close-up photographs show how much drawing sits inside each element, with serrated saz leaves, tiny 5 petal blossoms and outlined rosette centers picked out one knot at a time. The all over floral layout means the pattern is not directional, so the rug can be turned end for end through the years and wear evenly. Three borders frame it: a broad green main band of alternating palmettes and trellis-filled boteh, and ivory guard stripes of scrolling vine on either side, closed by a plain burgundy selvedge edge and hand-tied ivory fringe.

A Burgundy, Green and Gold Palette

The ground is a deep wine burgundy that shifts with the light, reading almost black-cherry along the shadowed edges and warmer, closer to raspberry, where the pile catches the light in the close-up frames. Against it the ornament is drawn in warm camel gold, apricot and burnt rust, with olive and forest green leaves and ivory outlines that keep the shapes legible from standing height. The main border reverses the scheme to a muted sage-to-forest green, which cools the whole rug and stops the red from dominating a room, while the ivory guard bands supply the bright line that separates field from border. Small touches of rose, plum and pale straw appear inside the palmette centers. Expect gentle abrash, the natural tonal banding of hand-dyed, hand-spun wool, running across the burgundy ground.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of northern India, and the workshops there still draw on the Mughal court tradition of Agra and Amritsar.
