9'1" x 11'9" Haji Jalili Oriental Rug | Brown & Ivory Earth Tone Medallion | New, Natural Wool
This is a new, never used Oriental rug, hand-knotted in Pakistan in natural wool on a cotton foundation and drawn after the Haji Jalili layout, one of the most copied and most respected classical designs in the trade. At 9'1" x 11'9" it covers a standard large room without crowding it, and the drawing reads exactly as it should at that scale: a soft chocolate brown field, an elongated ivory medallion, and a border system of seven bands that steps out from rust to gold to a wide ivory main stripe. The pile is a medium-low cut, dense enough that the detail stays crisp underfoot, and the back photos show a clean, even knot line with no pull or unevenness. It arrives with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, and it is in perfect, unused condition with full pile and original selvedges and fringe.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a long lobed ivory medallion that runs nearly two thirds of the length, anchored by 8 petal rosettes at each end and a smaller star rosette at the middle, each one outlined in a fine rust red line that keeps the shape legible against the brown ground. Around it the field is filled edge to edge with an all-over vine: curling split leaves, serrated lancet leaves, small palmettes and tight cinquefoil blossoms, with pale ivory cloud-band scrolls tucked into the 4 corners of the field. The spandrels repeat the ivory of the medallion so the eye reads a clear frame. The border is the part that shows the draftsmanship. A wide ivory main border of linked palmettes and rosettes sits between narrower rust and gold guard stripes, with thin sage green ribbons separating them, and the corners turn cleanly on all 4 sides rather than being cut off, which is the sign the cartoon was properly resolved before weaving. It is a traditional drawing that suits the format of most 9x12 area rugs without the pattern feeling stretched.
A Quiet Earth Tone Palette of Brown, Beige and Sage Green
The field is a warm mid brown that shifts with the light, closer to coffee where the pile lies away from you and closer to camel where it lies toward you, as the angled photos show. Against it the drawing is worked in beige, straw gold and a soft ivory, with sage green leaves that cool the whole thing down and stop the brown from reading heavy. Rust and terracotta appear as outlines and in the wider border stripe, and there are small sparks of coral pink, apricot and a near-black charcoal in the flower centers that give the surface depth at close range. The main border is the lightest area on the rug, a clean ivory that lifts the perimeter and makes the brown field look intentional rather than dark. There is no high-contrast red or navy anywhere, so this is a genuinely neutral rug: it sits with walnut and oak furniture, leather, cream upholstery and warm white walls, and it will not fight a room that already has pattern in it.
Made in Pakistan: Weaving Town Tradition and Quality
Pakistan's weaving workshops are among the few places still producing hand-knotted room-size rugs at this level of drawing, and this piece is a good example of what that industry does well: a faithful classical cartoon, hand-spun natural wool with real luster, and a knot count high enough to carry small floral detail without the motifs blurring. The back photo tells the story better than any claim, with straight, tight rows of knots across a cotton warp and weft, a firm handle, and tidy overcast selvedges on both long sides. The wool has been left in its natural state rather than heavily washed down, so the pile keeps body and will settle rather than shed. A rug built this way takes daily traffic in a living room or under a dining table for decades, and because it is brand new you get the full life of the pile rather than inheriting someone else's wear.
