9'1" x 12'4" Ivory Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Traditional Design | Excellent Condition

This 9'1" x 12'4" hand-knotted rug reads like a flower garden seen from above. An ivory ground carries hundreds of small blossoming sprays out to a deep red border that frames and steadies the whole piece, and the drawing stays symmetrical from end to end without ever turning stiff. It is a traditional Oriental rug in the classical sense: wool pile knotted by hand onto a cotton foundation, finished with plain woven ends and the original cotton fringe you can see in the close-up of the back. The pile is full, the sides are straight, the colors are clean, and at this scale it sits comfortably with the room sized 9x12 rugs that anchor a full seating group. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral design rather than a single dominant medallion, though a small lobed rosette marks the exact center of the rug and radiates outward in mirrored quarters. Around it the weaver has packed open cabbage roses, tight carnations, blue palmettes, feathered paisley botehs, tulip buds and thin curling vine work, each spray drawn with its own dark outline so the flowers stay separate instead of blurring into one mass. The 4 corners are closed with small floral cartouches set on a fine hatched ground, a detail that reads clearly in the corner photograph. Five bands make up the surround: a broad red main border of connected palmettes and rosettes, flanked by blue guard stripes of running vine, then narrow outer stripes of tiny repeating blossoms on a green and ivory ground. The proportion is well judged, with roughly a foot of border weight on each side holding in a busy field.

A Detailed Look at the Colors

The ground is a warm ivory and cream, closer to unbleached wool than to white, which is what lets the flower colors sit softly instead of shouting. The blossoms run through a whole family of pinks and reds: dusty rose, raspberry, coral and a clear cherry red on the open roses, with a few apricot and peach buds scattered through the field for lift. Blues do the balancing work, moving from slate and cornflower on the palmettes to a deep indigo used for outlines and flower centers. Leaves and stems are worked in pine green and a lighter sage, and the narrow outer stripe picks up that same green. The main border is a deep brick to burgundy red, cooler and darker than the reds inside the field, so the frame recedes slightly and the ivory center comes forward. Seen from a standing height, as in the second and third photographs, the whole surface settles into a soft rose and cream tone with blue and green threading through it.

Made in Pakistan: Weave and Quality

Pakistan's workshops have been weaving classical floral patterns on upright looms for generations, and the best of that output is judged the same way any fine hand-knotted rug is judged: by the clarity of the drawing and the density of the knots behind it. Turn this one over and the evidence is on the back, where the pattern reads almost as sharply as it does on the face, the rows are even, and the knot nodes are small and tightly packed against the ruler. That density is why the curved vine work and the tiny 5 petal blossoms in the guard stripes hold their shape rather than stepping off into blocks. The wool has a low sheen and a firm handle, spun for hard wear, and the cotton foundation keeps a rug of this width lying flat. Selvedges are intact on both long sides and the ends are secured with their original flat woven finish, all of which supports the excellent condition grade.
