9'9" x 13'9" Sino Oriental Rug | All-Over Floral Design | Wool & Silk | Excellent Condition

This is a fine Sino Oriental rug at 9'9" x 13'9", hand-knotted in wool with silk accents on a cotton foundation and finished with hand-tied ivory fringe. The pile is short and tightly packed, which is why the drawing holds so much small detail across a field this large, and the back photo with the ruler shows how many knots sit in each inch. It has never been used, the pile stands evenly with no wear paths or fading, and the selvages and both end finishes are original and intact. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver ran a mirrored all-over floral design across the whole field, built from thin scrolling vines that split, curl and reconnect from one end of the rug to the other. Large shaded palmettes and full-blown rosettes anchor the repeat, with clusters of small blossoms, closed buds, tulip forms and slender lanceolate leaves filling every space between them. One 8 petal rosette sits at the exact center of the field with a paired spray of leaves running left and right from it, a quiet substitute for a medallion. The black main border carries a procession of big cone shaped palmettes alternating with flower heads on a continuous vine, framed by narrow ivory guard stripes of small 4 petal flowers and star rosettes, and the 4 corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif. The corner close-up shows how precisely the border turns, which is the detail that separates careful workshop weaving from production work.

The Dark Maroon Field and Its Palette

The field is a deep dark maroon, closer to wine and dried plum than to a bright red, and it reads a shade warmer or cooler depending on the light and the direction of the pile. Against it the floral work is worked mostly in ivory, sand beige, soft rose and a dusty pink, with muted sage and olive green for the leaves and vines and small notes of near-black for the tiny paired blossoms that punctuate the repeat. The silk in the pile catches light on the flower heads and leaf tips, so the pattern lifts slightly off the maroon ground rather than sitting flat. The main border flips the contrast completely: a true black ground with ivory, tan, rose and pale gold palmettes, which throws a strong frame around the field and makes the rug read as finished from across the room. The guard stripes add small dots of brick red and navy. Overall it is a dark, formal palette that sits well with wood tones, warm neutrals and cream upholstery.

Sino Weaving and Quality

Sino rugs are hand-knotted in China by workshops that took up the classical court floral vocabulary and wove it at a high knot count, and the best of them, like this one, are judged on the same things as any fine Oriental piece: the fineness of the weave, the accuracy of the curved line, and the quality of the wool. The reverse shows a tight, even knot grid with no slack rows, which is what allows the vines to curve smoothly instead of stepping. The wool is dense and low-cut so the outlines stay crisp, and the silk is used only where it earns its place, in the highlights.
