Design and Motifs

The field is built from a grid of framed compartments, the old garden panel idea in which each box is treated as a separate planted bed. Some panels carry round medallions packed with 8 petal rosettes and split leaves, others hold single flowering sprays, urn-like plant forms, or small square lattice blocks set on a checkerboard ground. Running through the middle is a burgundy cross-form reserve carrying arabesque vinework and, at its center, an 8 point star medallion outlined in ivory pearls with a green rosette core. The 4 corners of the field are anchored by larger panels with big open blossoms, and the surrounding border system is a deep green main band of scrolling paisley and acanthus forms, flanked by copper vine stripes and narrow ivory guard stripes with repeating 4 petal flowerheads. It is a busy design handled with discipline: nothing crowds, and the symmetry holds on both axes.

A Burgundy, Copper and Deep Green Palette

Color is the reason to buy this one. The central reserve and several compartments are a saturated burgundy that goes almost black-cherry in low light, while the majority of the field panels sit in copper, terracotta and warm salmon tones that catch the light and give the rug its glow. Against those warm values the border does the heavy lifting in a deep forest green, dark enough to frame the whole piece and cool enough to keep all that red from running hot. Scattered through the drawing are small hits of teal blue, soft rose pink, gold and ivory in the flowerheads, leaf veins and guard stripes, and those few cool accents are what keep the palette from reading monochrome. Ivory outlining around the medallion and panel frames gives the eye a clean line to follow.
