9'7" x 12'4" Persian Wool Rug | Traditional Floral Medallion | Brand New, Never Used

This is a full room size Persian rug in perfect, never used condition: 9'7" x 12'4" of hand-knotted soft natural wool on a cotton foundation, with a deep red field carrying a single ivory and blue medallion. It covers the floor area most American living and dining rooms need, which puts it squarely among the most practical 9x12 Persian rugs we stock, and the extra inches in both directions mean furniture legs sit on wool rather than hovering at the edge. The wool has not been walked on, so the pile is still full and the clipped surface still has its original sheen, visible in the close-up photographs where the light turns the red field slightly rose. A signed certificate of authenticity is issued with the rug confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is the classic curvilinear medallion and corner formula, worked out with a lot more detail than the format usually gets. At the center sits a small 8 petal rosette in rose and ivory, ringed by a lobed star medallion outlined in navy and framed by pairs of flowering vases that rise on either side of the vertical axis. Above and below the medallion are stepped pendants, and the open red ground around them is not left empty: it is filled with small cypress sprigs, scattered star flowers and leafy stems that keep the field alive without crowding it. Each of the 4 corners carries a large spandrel of coiling arabesque and split palmette, drawn in rose, sky blue, taupe and ivory so the corners read almost as a separate composition. Three borders finish the rug, a wide navy main border of linked floral meander with turning palmettes, flanked by narrow ivory and light blue guard stripes of repeating tulip and rosette heads, with flat woven ends and natural fringe at both ends.

Color Palette

The field is a clear, bright true red, the kind that photographs slightly cooler than it looks in daylight, and it is the reason this piece belongs with the best red Persian rugs rather than the orange-leaning examples. Against that red the main border drops to a deep inky navy, which gives the whole rug a dark frame and makes the ivory guard stripes snap. Inside the medallion and spandrels the palette opens up considerably: cream and chalk ivory for the outlines, rose and candy pink in the petals and vase bodies, two blues (a soft powder blue and a stronger cobalt), a dusty taupe used for the big arabesque leaves, and small touches of sage and bottle green in the leaf tips. A few dark wine and almost-black accents punctuate the medallion center. Nothing here is harsh, because the pink and powder blue act as a buffer between the red ground and the navy border, and the overall effect at a distance is a warm red room anchor with a cool, detailed heart.

Origin and Weave

This is a Persian town workshop piece, woven on a cotton foundation with a wool pile and a design drawn from a cartoon rather than from memory, which is why the 2 halves of the field mirror each other so exactly and the border meander turns the corners cleanly. The reverse photograph, shot alongside a ruler, shows the point: tight, even rows of knots with no slubs, no uneven packing and no change of tension down the length, which is the signature of an experienced weaver working to a set count rather than village piecework. The wool itself is the soft, high lustre type that holds dye brightly and polishes with use, and the pile has been clipped at a medium height so the fine detail in the medallion and the small field sprigs stay legible. No weaving city or signature cartouche appears on the rug, so it is offered simply as an authentic Persian hand-knotted rug in the classic traditional medallion style, brand new and never laid on a floor.
