7'1" x 10'10" Persian Nain Rug | Ivory Wool & Silk All Over Floral Medallion | Brand New, Never Used

This is a full room size piece in the classic town style: 7'1" x 10'10", ivory ground, wool pile with silk worked into the highlights, and a 3/8" clip that keeps the drawing crisp. It has never been on a floor, so the silk still stands up and catches light in the palmettes and cloudbands, and the pile has no traffic lanes, no pressed areas and no faded edges. The back photograph shows what you are paying for, a tight, even knotting on a cotton foundation with the pattern reading almost as clearly from the reverse as it does from the face, which is the honest test of a fine weave. Design and Motifs

The center holds a layered star medallion built out of small interlocking palmettes and heart shaped leaves, with a single rosette at its heart and 4 red 4 petal flowers set at the cardinal points. Around it the field is not empty for a single inch: split leaf arabesques, curling cloudbands, Shah Abbasi palmettes and fine vine scroll run edge to edge in a mirrored all over layout, so the design reads as one continuous garden rather than a medallion floating on plain ground. The 4 corners carry pear shaped palmette spandrels outlined in fine cord. The main border repeats a palmette and vine sequence, flanked on both sides by narrow guard stripes of small rosettes, and the outermost edge finishes in a twisted barber pole stripe that frames the whole piece. Detail photographs show how many separate elements the designer packed into a single square foot, which is only possible at this knot density.

Ivory Ground with Sky Blue and Indigo Drawing

The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to a cold white, and it carries the whole rug because every other color is read against it. The blues do the work: a soft powder or sky blue fills the large palmettes and the medallion panels, while a deep indigo navy draws the outlines, the vine stems and the cloudband hooks, giving the pattern its structure from across the room. Between those two blues sit camel, honey and a light taupe grey in the leaves and rosette centers, and the silk highlights pick up those tones and lift them a shade brighter depending on where you stand. Small burgundy red 4 petal flowers are scattered through the field as accents and repeat in the border, and the corner palmettes carry a quiet sage green that appears nowhere else. Nothing here shouts. It is a light, cool, high ivory palette with blue holding the line.

Nain Weaving and the Quality of the Knot

Nain sits on the edge of the desert in central Persia, not far from Isfahan, and it turned to fine rug weaving relatively late, after its wool cloth trade declined. The town then built its reputation on one thing, precision, borrowing the curved line and floral vocabulary of the Isfahan workshops and pushing knot counts high enough to draw it properly. The signature Nain look is exactly what you see here: an ivory or light ground, indigo and sky blue drawing, silk used as an outlining and highlight thread so the motifs stand slightly proud of the wool, and every element edged in fine cord. On a piece this size that discipline matters, because a 7'1" x 10'10" field gives the weaver nowhere to hide a sloppy repeat, and the mirrored halves of this field match cleanly along the center axis. The wool is soft with a good sheen, the clip is low and even, and the selvedges and ends are intact and original.
