This is a brand new, never used 9'9" x 13'11" Peshawar rug woven in the Ziegler manner, and the first thing you notice when you walk on it is the hand. The pile is soft, silky Ghazni wool clipped to 5/16", long enough to hold light and short enough to keep the drawing crisp. A rust red field carries a large stepped geometric medallion in ivory, framed by 4 ivory spandrels and a deep black border of palmettes and curling vines. At close to 10 by 14 feet it is a true room size piece, the kind of Oriental rug that anchors a full seating group rather than floating under a coffee table. Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Ziegler, built on the Serapi style formula of a large stepped medallion set against an open field. At the center sits an 8 petal black rosette with a small coral ring and an ivory octagon at its heart, each petal filled with a pale blossom and a pair of curling leaves. That medallion floats on an ivory ground scattered with slender flowering stems, hooked leaves and small birds, then the whole panel is enclosed in a serrated rust red lozenge that steps outward toward the 4 corners. The ivory spandrels repeat the same vocabulary at larger scale, with leafy sprays, rosettes and the occasional animal figure tucked into the corner space. The main black border runs a steady rhythm of palmettes, diamond cartouches and split leaves, bracketed by narrow sage and rust guard stripes. A Rust Red, Ivory and Inky Black Palette

The wool is the reason: Ghazni fleece from the highlands is long stapled, high in lanolin and unusually soft, which is why this pile feels silky underfoot and takes on a low sheen as the light moves across it. The rug is knotted on a cotton foundation, the standard for a piece of this scale because cotton holds the rug square and flat over nearly 14 feet of length.
