13'7" x 19'2" Chobi Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Ivory & Sage Oushak Design | Fine Ghazni Wool, Brand New

At 13'7" x 19'2", this Chobi Peshawar Ziegler is a true room-defining piece, the scale that a great room, long formal salon or double-height library needs before the furniture stops floating. It is hand-knotted in Peshawar from handspun Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation, cut to a low 1/4 inch pile that keeps the drawing legible and lets the rug lie flat under heavy tables and sectionals. The palette is deliberately quiet: an ivory ground carrying sage and soft taupe tracery, finished with a wash that gives a brand new weaving the settled look of something that has been in the house for decades. It is a serious Oriental rug and one of the larger pieces in our stock of oversize hand-knotted rugs. Never used, in perfect condition, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Oushak all-over: broad palmettes, open rosettes and long serrated leaves strung along a slow scrolling vine that repeats across the whole field rather than building to a single central medallion. The repeat is drawn large, which is exactly right at this size, because a small-scale pattern would turn to visual noise over 260 square feet. Look closely at the field and you can follow one vine from a cupped blossom to a curled leaf and on to the next rosette without a break. The main border carries the same vocabulary at a slightly tighter interval, a meander of palmettes and leaf forms held between narrow guard stripes, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif. Outlining is soft rather than hard, so the pattern reads as texture from across a room and as detailed floral work up close.

Ivory Ground, Sage and Taupe Drawing

The field is ivory, but not a flat one. It moves between cream, oatmeal and a pale wheat tone as the handspun wool takes the dye differently from batch to batch, and that gentle abrash is what keeps a neutral rug this large from looking printed. Over it, the floral work is carried in a muted sage green and a soft mushroom taupe, with a few blossoms lifting into pale gold and the faintest blush where the wash has warmed the dye. The border sits a half step deeper than the field, enough to frame the rug without drawing a hard line around it. There is no black, no navy and no strong red anywhere in the weave, which is why this piece works with limestone, bleached oak, linen upholstery and dark walnut equally well. It is a rug that sets a tone rather than competing for attention.

Peshawar Weaving and the Chobi Ziegler Tradition

Peshawar, in northern Pakistan, is where the Chobi Ziegler style is woven today. Chobi refers to the plant and wood based dyes these workshops favor, and Ziegler recalls the 19th century European commissions that first softened big Oushak drawings for Western rooms. The wool is the reason these rugs hold up: Ghazni fleece from the Afghan highlands, handspun rather than machine spun, high in lanolin, so the pile stays springy and takes a light sheen underfoot. Weaving a piece 19 feet long demands a loom and a team that most workshops simply do not have, and the tension has to stay even for months on end. You can see the result in the last photo, where the tape measure sits against a tight, regular knot line on a cotton foundation. The rug is brand new, unused, and ready to go straight onto the floor.
