9' x 12'3" Indian Oriental Rug | Navy Blue Floral Medallion | Thick Dense Wool Pile

Handled in person, the first thing you notice about this 9' x 12'3" area rug is weight and hand. The 3/8" wool pile is thick, dense and springy, cut evenly across the whole field, and it sits flat on the floor without waves or curl. It is brand new and never used, knot for knot as it left the loom, with straight sides, tight navy selvages and clean ivory warp ends finished into an even fringe. The drawing is classical: a pale lobed medallion floating on a deep navy ground, camel spandrels in all 4 corners and a wide sky blue border. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The centre is a lobed rosette medallion built in concentric rings, a small blue and camel core surrounded by radiating petals filled with tiny red blossoms, blue leaf tips and sage stems, so it reads as a flower seen from directly above. Around it the navy ground carries a dense all over floral field of split palmettes, curling serrated leaves, rosettes and thin scrolling vines that link one blossom to the next without a break. Two large pendant palmettes anchor the medallion top and bottom. The camel corner spandrels are stepped rather than curved and each holds an oversized cabbage rose in ivory and salmon. The main border is a sky blue band of alternating palmettes and leaf sprays, framed by salmon rose guard stripes of small blossoms and a plain navy outer guard that squares the whole composition off.

The ground is a true navy blue, dark enough to read almost black in low light and clearly midnight blue when the sun hits it, which is exactly why the drawing stands out the way it does. Against that ground the weavers used a soft sky blue for the medallion and the main border, so the pale border frames the dark field and the pale medallion pulls the eye straight to the centre. The connecting colors are warm: salmon rose in the vines and guard stripes, camel and light tan in the spandrels and pendants, ivory in the blossom highlights, with small hits of true red and sage green in the flower heads. Nothing is harsh or electric. It is a cool blue rug warmed by rose and camel, which makes it easy to live with next to wood, leather, brass and cream upholstery.

Woven in India: Origin and Quality

This piece was hand-knotted in India, where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted weaving is done today. Indian workshops took on the classical medallion and vine vocabulary, trained generations of knotters on it, and now produce floor rugs at a level of consistency and wool quality that is hard to match at this price.
