9' x 12' Ivory Chobi Peshawar Rug | All Over Floral Design | Hand-Spun Vegetable Dyed Wool
This is the quiet, light-toned room rug that most buyers are hunting for and rarely find in a true 9' x 12'. The field is ivory shading into pale gold, the drawing is open rather than crowded, and the whole piece is hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with hand-spun wool that takes light the way only loosely spun, naturally dyed yarn does. It is a Chobi Peshawar, one of the best values in the modern Oriental rug market, and it sits squarely in the most useful of all room formats, which is why we keep 9x12 rugs in constant stock. Condition is perfect and never used, with full even pile, straight sides and original ends as shown in the back photograph. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is 100% hand-knotted.
Please Note About the Photographs:
This rug was photographed under different lighting from several angles. The overall shots read warmer and more golden, while the angled floor view reads cooler and closer to true ivory. The honest reading is an ivory to pale gold field with an olive border, and the close-up detail shot is enlarged well beyond actual scale. Nothing in these photos is wear, fade or damage, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. Instead the weaver worked a classical all over floral design, a loose lattice of small rosettes, 8 petal blossoms, tulip sprays, serrated leaves and little flowering tufts that repeat across the ivory ground on a gentle diagonal. Two small lozenge cartouches, each ringed by a halo of dots, mark the vertical center line and give the eye something to settle on without turning the rug into a formal medallion layout. Where the field meets the border, broad rust palmettes push inward from the long sides, a detail borrowed from old village drawing that keeps the composition from feeling flat. The border system runs 3 bands: a wide olive main border carrying large cream and rust palmettes with angular vine, flanked by narrow rust guard stripes filled with a running clover and leaf motif, with a fine outlined stripe framing the field itself. Corners are resolved cleanly, which on a rug this size is a real sign of a careful loom.
A Study in Ivory, Olive and Rust
The color is the reason to buy this one. The field is ivory with a warm cream and pale gold cast, and because the wool is hand-spun it carries soft horizontal abrash, visible in the close-up as faint bands of light and shadow that move across the ground instead of a flat printed tone. Against that, the drawing is picked out in muted rust and terracotta, dusty sage green, soft putty brown and chalk white, with the odd deeper brown outline holding a flower in place. The main border steps up to a soft olive and antique gold, just dark enough to frame the pale field, and the rust guard stripes supply the only real saturation in the rug. Nothing shouts. It is the kind of palette that lets heavy furniture, dark wood and stone floors breathe, and it belongs with our other ivory and beige rugs rather than with bold reds and navies.
Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan
Peshawar in northwest Pakistan is one of the great modern weaving centers, and the Chobi group is its signature product. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and root dyes the workshops use instead of chrome colors, which is exactly why this field reads soft and lived-in rather than new. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, so the yarn is uneven by design and the dye takes at slightly different strengths along each strand, giving the abrash you see in the detail shots. Construction is a single wefted hand-knotted weave on a cotton warp, cut to a medium low pile that shows the drawing crisply and stands up to real traffic under a dining table or a sectional. The back photograph with the ruler shows the knotting straight and regular across the full 108" width, the ends finished flat and the selvedges wrapped tight. Hand-knotted work at this level of drawing and dye honesty is the reason Pakistani Chobi rugs now compete directly with far more expensive traditional weaving.
