8'11" x 11'6" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Vegetable Dyed Cream Field | All Over Floral Design

This is a quiet room-size piece that does most of its work through tone rather than contrast. The 8'11" x 11'6" field is a warm cream that shifts toward soft gold under light, and the whole drawing, an open all over system of palmettes, rosettes and long leaves, is held in colors only two or three steps away from the ground. It is hand-knotted with hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, the pile is even and full, and the rug has never been used. Design and Motifs

The field carries a repeating all over lattice of large open palmettes and 8 petal rosettes joined by thin arabesque vines and long sickle leaves, with the vertical axis running clean from one end to the other. Nothing is crowded: each flower head is given air, and the negative ground between motifs is as much a part of the drawing as the motifs themselves. The main border is wide and generous, filled with alternating anthemion palmettes and split leaf forms, and it is framed on both sides by a narrow minor stripe of small tulip or boteh shapes set between tiny square dots, clearly visible in the corner close-up. The corner resolutions are handled properly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut short, which is the detail that separates a well drawn all over design rug from a mechanical one.

The Cream and Vegetable Dyed Palette

Cream is the governing color, but it is not a flat cream. The hand-spun wool takes the natural dyes unevenly, so the ground moves through ivory, oatmeal and a light honey gold in soft horizontal bands of abrash that read as depth rather than inconsistency. Over that ground the leaves are drawn in a dusty sage green that dulls almost to olive in shadow, the palmettes in pale gold and biscuit, and the small accent buds in a muted salmon pink. The only strong note anywhere is a dark garnet red used sparingly for outlines, flower centers and the tiny leaf tips scattered through the field, and it is exactly that restraint that keeps the rug so easy to live with. Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, has become one of the most reliable sources of good hand-knotted work in the world, and the Chobi line is its best known product. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and vegetable dye stuffs used instead of synthetics, and the process is the reason these rugs age so gracefully: the colors soften rather than turn. The weavers use hand-spun wool rather than machine-spun yarn, which is what gives the pile its slightly irregular luster and the field its gentle striation.
