9' x 12' Oriental Wool Rug | Transitional Arts & Crafts Rose and Vine | Sage Green & Gold | Brand New

Laid out flat, this 9' x 12' rug reads like Arts and Crafts drawing translated into wool: a softly striated sage green field carrying tidy rows of stylized rosebuds on slender stems, held inside a wide gold border of looping vines, gold roses and near-black ivy leaves. It is hand-knotted with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, brand new and never used, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. The drawing is quiet enough to work as a foundation piece rather than a focal point, which is why this size sells so well among 9x12 rugs for sofa-and-chairs groupings, and the palette sits comfortably with oak, brass, olive and cream.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The flat overhead photograph was taken under warm light and pushes the field toward olive gold. The angled views and the close-up detail shots are truer to the rug in hand, where the ground reads as a soft sage green with a cool blue-grey cast. The field also shifts tone as you walk around it, which is the hand-spun wool catching the light, not fading or wear.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a strict all-over design: thin brown stalks rise in ranked columns, each one topped by a small gold cap like a stylized bud, and between them run horizontal bands of paired ivory-gold roses flanked by black trefoil leaf clusters. The repeat is rhythmic and architectural, closer to Glasgow and Vienna rose drawing of the early 20th century than to classical floral work, which is exactly what makes it read as transitional rather than period. A narrow slate blue-grey guard stripe separates the field from the wide gold border, and the border itself carries one continuous vine that loops into circles, each circle enclosing a curled gold rose with a triad of ink-black ivy leaves set against it. All 4 corners resolve cleanly, with the vine turning without breaking its loop, and the outer gold band is left plain so the pattern has somewhere to breathe.

Sage Green, Gold and Black: the Color Story

The field is a muted sage green that leans grey-blue in daylight and warms toward olive under lamplight, streaked with fine horizontal abrash that gives the ground movement instead of a flat printed look. Against that cool ground the border runs warm: a broad honey gold that moves between wheat, mustard and pale amber across its width, with the roses picked out a shade lighter in butter and ivory-gold so they lift off the field without shouting. The leaves are the anchor, a dense ink black that photographs almost navy in the detail shots and does the job a dark border outline usually does, pinning the whole composition down. Stems and vine tracery are drawn in a warm coffee brown, the guard stripes in slate blue-grey, and the fringe finishes in natural ivory. The result is a three-color scheme, sage green, gold and black, that behaves like a neutral in a room: it will sit under grey or cream upholstery, hold its own against dark walnut, and pick up brass and olive accents.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This is an honest Made in Pakistan piece, and that is a compliment. Along with India, Pakistan is where most of the world's serious contemporary hand-knotted work is produced today, on looms worked by weavers trained in the classical tradition, using hand-spun wool and the same knotting discipline that built the reputation of the Oriental rug in the first place. You can read the quality on the back: a tight, even cotton grid with the pattern showing through crisply, no loose or skipped rows, and no glue or backing of any kind. On the face, the curved vine of the border holds its line through the turns, the rose outlines stay consistent across 12 feet of length, and the wool has the dry lustre of good hand-spun yarn rather than the shine of a chemical wash. It is a well-drawn, well-knotted modern and contemporary rug in perfect, never-used condition, with a full pile and decades of floor life ahead of it.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
