This 10'5" x 14'10" hand-knotted wool rug takes its drawing from the old Khotan weavings of the Silk Road oases and translates them into a quiet, pale room-size piece. The field reads as a soft slate blue, almost sage under daylight, and carries three medallions on the long axis: two ivory discs ringed with brown cloud knots, and a square center panel framed in Greek key fret around a mauve roundel. Design and Motifs

The layout is classic Khotan: a three medallion spine down the length, with the square central panel enclosed by a wide Greek key meander and the two round medallions above and below it filled with 8 petal rosettes and interlaced cloud knots. Between them the field is scattered with small squared ornaments, star rosettes, snowflake octagons and slender pomegranate vines, and each end closes with a flowering vase rising from the border. The corners carry oversized fret brackets that turn the whole field into an architectural frame. Three bands make up the border system: an outer chevron stripe in blush, tan and blue, a compartment band of alternating 8 petal blossoms, and a broad ivory main border of running key fret. The Light Slate Blue and Beige Palette

Color is the reason this rug works in a modern room. The ground is a light slate blue with a green cast, softened by gentle abrash so the tone shifts slightly from one end to the other rather than sitting flat. Against it the medallions and borders are ivory and warm beige, with the central disc drawn in a muted mauve brown that also picks out the fret lines and the small cloud knots. Blush pink appears in the chevron border, in the star rosettes and in the vase at each end, and a pale butter gold fills the middle of the lower roundel. There is no strong contrast anywhere: the darkest value in the whole rug is the aubergine brown outline work. Woven in Pakistan in the Khotan Tradition

Khotan is a design name rather than a place of manufacture here. The original weavings came from the oasis towns of East Turkestan, where Chinese fret and lattice work met Central Asian medallion drawing, and that vocabulary has been carried on by the Peshawar workshops of northern Pakistan, who weave it in hand-spun wool with muted, washed tones in the Chobi manner. This piece is made in Pakistan on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, knotted evenly enough that the fret lines stay straight across more than 14 feet of length, which is where lesser weaving falls apart.
