This is a brand new, never used room-size piece measuring 10'9" x 14'1", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classic Serapi manner: one large stepped medallion anchored on a deep forest green field, ivory corner spandrels, and a wide burgundy main border. The scale suits a full seating group or a long dining table, and it sits comfortably in the family of 10x14 area rugs that most large living rooms and great rooms are built around. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made reproduction, every knot was tied by hand, and the piece ships with a certificate of authenticity documenting its construction, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a gold and ivory stepped medallion with a small 8 petal rosette at its heart, ringed in burgundy and slate blue, with hexagonal cartouches spreading east and west and long pendants reaching north and south toward the ends of the field. Each pendant closes in an ivory shield around a burgundy and blue heart, exactly the kind of angular drawing that makes geometric medallion rugs read so clearly from across a room. Around the medallion the green field carries serrated leaves, angular palmettes, hooked vine stems and small rosettes, all drawn in straight lines and stepped diagonals rather than curves. The 4 corner spandrels are ivory, filled with green panels, scrolling leaf forms and white star rosettes. The main border runs burgundy with large palmettes, ivory cloud band scrolls and leafy arabesques, framed by narrow guard stripes of small flowerheads on ivory and a fine blue outline that separates border from field.

A Forest Green Field with Gold, Ivory and Burgundy

The field is a deep forest green that shifts toward olive in direct light and toward a cool teal in the shaded close-ups, with the gentle tonal movement you get from hand-spun, hand-dyed wool. Against it the medallion glows in warm gold and apricot, outlined in ivory and deep burgundy. The main border is a dark wine burgundy, dense enough to hold the whole 14'1" length together, while the spandrels and guard stripes bring in soft ivory and cream. Secondary colors are quietly varied: sage and grass green in the leaves, slate and denim blue in the rosette petals, terracotta and dusty coral in the flowerheads, plus small notes of chocolate brown and pale blush.
