Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Between them sit lancet leaves, split palmettes, small serrated blossoms and thin tendrils that loop back on themselves. The border system is three bands deep: a wide camel main border carrying flowering sprays, arabesques and the occasional cypress-like leaf, flanked by narrow guard stripes filled with a running reciprocal motif and tiny paired blossoms. Flat woven kilim ends finish into ivory fringe, and the selvages are overcast in dark wool.

Color Palette

The field is the star: a charcoal black with a warm brown undertone, closer to dark bitter chocolate than to jet, which keeps the rug from feeling cold or graphic. The Zigler design takes its name from the European trading house that commissioned large, softly colored all over floral carpets for Western drawing rooms in the late 19th century, and the drawing has been reinterpreted ever since. This one is hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the workshops around Lahore and Peshawar have become the leading source for this style, working with hand-spun wool, natural dyes and a knot count well above the commercial norm.
