10' x 13'10" Chobi Ziegler Oriental Rug | Sand Field with Ivory and Pale Blue Grey Vines | New, Never Used

This is the quiet end of the hand-knotted world. The field reads as warm sand with a faint camel drift through it, the drawing sits only a shade or two away from the ground color, and the whole 10' x 13'10" surface behaves more like a beautifully made textile than a pattern statement. It is a brand new Chobi Ziegler, hand-knotted one knot at a time in natural wool on a cotton foundation, clipped to a low 1/4" pile so every leaf and rosette stays crisp. As a room size piece it lands squarely in the 10x14 rug class, wide enough to carry a full seating group or a 10 seat table. A certificate of authenticity is included with the rug confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The layout is a classic Ziegler all over design, built on a large scale lattice of scrolling vines that opens into broad palmettes, curled serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes. There is no true medallion, only a slightly stronger rosette at the center point where the vine systems meet, visible in the close photographs as a rounded form outlined in soft grey. Because the repeat is drawn large and loose, the field never looks busy from standing height. The main border is generous, filled with a turning vine that links flowerheads and split leaves, and it is framed by narrow guard stripes carrying a running reciprocal motif in pale grey and cream. Corners are resolved cleanly, the border turns without the pattern jamming, and the ivory fringe at both ends is the natural continuation of the warps.

A Palette of Sand, Camel and Pale Blue Grey

Color is the whole point of this rug. The ground is a soft sand beige that tips toward camel where the light catches the pile, and because the wool is hand spun there is a gentle horizontal striation, an abrash, running through it that keeps the surface alive rather than flat. The drawing is worked in ivory and a warm cream, with passages of soft gold and honey in the border that read a little deeper in the corner and border photographs. The one cool note is a muted blue grey, used sparingly: it shades the outlines of the central rosette, picks out leaf tips through the field and runs as a continuous stripe in the inner and outer guard borders. Against the greige tile in the room shots the rug warms noticeably, which is how it will read against wood floors. Nothing here shouts, and that restraint is why it sits under almost any furniture palette.

Chobi Ziegler Weaving in Pakistan

Chobi Ziegler rugs are woven by the highland workshops of Pakistan, where weavers hand spin the wool, dye it in small lots with muted plant based colors and then wash the finished piece to soften the contrast. The name chobi refers to the wood derived dyes behind that faded, sun warmed look, and the Ziegler design vocabulary is the large scale vine and palmette repeat that decorators have collected since the late 1800s. Workmanship on this piece is honest and consistent: the back photograph shows even rows, a tight cotton foundation and a straight selvage with no waisting across a 10 foot width, which is not easy to hold over almost 14 feet of weaving. If you are weighing this style against other categories, our guide to Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains exactly where a Chobi sits, and the full range of hand-knotted Oriental rugs is worth a look alongside it.
