This is a new weaving that reads like an old one. Hand-knotted in Jaipur with a 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation, the rug carries a deep brown field scattered with oversized gold and rust palmettes, and it is framed by a brick red border of gold cartouches and teal lozenges. The drawing is deliberately generous rather than busy, which is exactly why a room of this scale suits it: at 10' x 13' there is enough open ground between the flowers for the pattern to breathe under furniture. It has never been on a floor, the pile is full and even edge to edge, and the condition is perfect. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver used a classic all over floral design, with huge lotus palmettes, some flat and rosette-like with concentric gold, pink and teal centers, others flaming outward in rust and gold rays like a struck match. They are connected by thin, loosely curling arabesque vines, split leaves and small 8 petal rosettes that fill the ground without crowding it. The main border is the strongest passage: brick red, carrying alternating gold shield cartouches and teal diamond lozenges, punctuated by tiny ivory 4 dot clusters that give the band a quiet rhythm. A single narrow gold guard stripe with a meandering green vine separates the border from the field, and the outer edge finishes in dark brown with ivory fringe at both ends. It is an antique traditional vocabulary, drawn large and drawn confidently.

A Brown Field Read in Rust, Gold, Sage and Teal

The field is the point of this rug. It is a deep, softly mottled brown with a plum undertone, and because the wool takes the dye unevenly there is gentle abrash running across the width, visible as broad vertical striations in the close-up shots. Against that ground the palmettes glow in honey gold and wheat, shaded into apricot pink and outlined in rust. Leaf work and flower centers are picked out in sage and a grayed teal green, the coolest notes in the palette and the reason the rug does not read as purely warm. The border shifts to an oxidized brick red, muted rather than bright, with the same gold and teal repeated so the frame ties back to the interior. Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great living hand-knotting centers, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made.
