11'6" x 15'3" Jaipur Wool Rug | Antique Sultanabad All-Over Design | Slate Blue & Gold | Made in India

This is a big, quiet, seriously well made room rug: 11'6" x 15'3" of hand-knotted wool drawn after the antique Sultanabad carpets of the late 19th century, woven in Jaipur, India. The field runs slate blue and the borders run a deep camel gold, and the whole thing has the softened, slightly smoky palette collectors look for in an old Oriental rug without any of the wear. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight, and the ivory cotton fringe is full and untouched. It ships brand new, never used, with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The ground color shifts between the photographs because of lighting. In the flat overhead shot it reads as a clear slate blue; under the warm warehouse lamps in the floor and close-up images the same wool reads browner, closer to plum and charcoal. Both are the same rug. In daylight expect a smoky slate blue with a warm brown undertone.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic Sultanabad composition with no central medallion: a repeating lattice of large lotus palmettes, serrated acanthus leaves and curling arabesque vines that travel from border to border. Drawing on this scale is intentionally generous, with broad leaf forms and open ground between the motifs, so the pattern stays legible even under furniture. Look closely and you will find small 8 petal rosettes, split-leaf tendrils and tiny secondary blossoms tucked into the vinework, most visible in the close-up images. The main border is a wide gold band of palmettes and paired leaves, flanked by 4 narrower guard stripes carrying diagonal ribbon and rosette meanders, and the whole thing is finished with a plain dark brown outer band that frames the rug cleanly. It belongs firmly in the family of all-over floral rugs, where the repeat, not a centerpiece, does the work.

Slate Blue, Gold and Rust in the Wool

The ground is a muted slate blue, the kind that leans gray-plum in low light and cool blue in daylight, and it is not a flat color: the wool has gentle tonal movement across the field that keeps such a large expanse from looking printed. Over it the motifs are worked in honey gold, camel and old brass, with soft olive and sage green leaves, warm chocolate browns, and rust to terracotta highlights on the leaf tips and blossom hearts. Occasional pale cream and dusty rose accents lift the palmette centers. The border reverses the balance, putting a broad camel gold ground under brown, olive and rust drawing, so the gold frame reads bright against the darker interior. Nothing here is loud. The whole palette is earth toned and low contrast, which is exactly why it sits comfortably with walnut, leather, brass and warm neutral walls.

Woven in Jaipur, India

Jaipur in Rajasthan is one of the great modern weaving centers, and India is now where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is produced. That is said with confidence, not as an apology. The weavers here work on cotton warps with a dense, hand-spun wool pile, and this piece shows it: a heavy handle, a level clip, straight sides and square corners across nearly 15 feet of length, which is far harder to hold than it sounds on a loom this wide. The back photograph shows an even, tightly packed knot structure with the pattern reading clearly through to the reverse. At 11'6" x 15'3" this is genuinely room-filling scale, and buyers shopping oversized rugs know how few pieces in this class arrive brand new, unwalked and in perfect condition.
