12'2" x 18'3" Chobi Ziegler Rug | Oversize Beige & Light Green All-Over Vine | Organic Wool, Never Used

This is a true palace-scale piece: 12'2" x 18'3" of hand-knotted organic wool, woven in the Chobi Ziegler manner with a pale beige field, a soft green main border and small rust and teal accents that keep the whole thing from going flat. It has never been used, and the pile still carries the slight sheen that handspun, vegetable-dyed wool has before a floor ever touches it. At this footprint it covers a great room or a long formal dining space wall to wall, and it is one of the larger pieces in our oversize rugs selection. Design and Motifs

The field runs as a continuous all-over design with no medallion: a thin, loosely drawn vine lattice carries broad palmettes, serrated saz leaves that curl back on themselves, 8 petal rosettes and small four-part blossoms. The drawing is deliberately relaxed rather than mathematically tight, which is exactly the Ziegler idiom, and the repeat is large enough that at 18 feet long the eye never catches the same unit twice in a row. Three borders frame it. The wide main border on its green ground alternates large ivory and rust rosettes with cross-shaped floral panels; inside and out sit narrower apricot guard bands of linked blossoms and leaf sprigs, with a final plain-toned outer band before the flat woven ends and cotton fringe seen in the corner photographs.

A Beige Field With Sage Green and Rust

The ground reads as a warm beige that shifts between sand and light gold depending on the light and the direction of the pile, with the gentle abrash of handspun wool visible as soft horizontal banding across the width. Against it the main border is a muted sage green, dusty rather than bright, and the guard bands sit in apricot and soft mauve-brown. Detail work is drawn in small doses: brick rust and deep red in the rosette centers, smoky teal and olive in the leaves, ivory in the palmette hearts, and a walnut brown in the vine tracery. Nothing in the palette is saturated, which is what makes a rug this large livable rather than overwhelming, and it sits comfortably with oak, limestone, brass and both cool and warm upholstery.

Woven in Peshawar: Chobi Ziegler Quality

Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and husk dyes that give these rugs their muted, pre-faded tone from the loom. Peshawar in northern Pakistan is where this weaving tradition has concentrated for decades, reviving the oversize decorative formula that the Ziegler trading house commissioned for Western drawing rooms in the 1880s. The weavers use handspun organic wool on a cotton foundation, and the back photograph shows an even, clearly legible knot grid with no pulling and a consistent pile height edge to edge, which is not a small thing on a piece 18 feet long.
