12' x 14'9" Oversize Modern Rug | Abstract Watercolor Field in Green & Multi | Brand New, Made in India

This is a brand new hand-knotted wool rug at a genuine room-filling scale, 12' x 14'9" of abstract color that behaves more like a painting than a floor covering. There is no border and no medallion: the field simply dissolves from lime green into turquoise, cornflower blue, mustard gold and rose pink, the way pigment spreads on wet paper. It belongs in the small group of oversize 12x15 modern rugs that can anchor a great room without a pattern competing with the furniture, and as a contemporary Oriental rug it is knotted by hand on a cotton foundation exactly as a traditional piece would be. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording the size, materials, weave and origin.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is entirely abstract and edge to edge, with no border and no repeating unit anywhere in the 12' x 14'9" field. Color arrives in broad vertical washes, a blue plume running down the left half, a rose and blush cloud across the upper right, and a column of gold that breaks up into drips and streaks toward the bottom. Between them the surface is speckled with thousands of tiny irregular flecks, an erosion or mosaic effect where ivory and taupe show through the green like weathered paint. The weaver has staggered these flecks knot by knot rather than following a strict grid, so the eye reads movement instead of repetition. Because the composition has no directional top or bottom, the rug can be turned end for end during its life, which spreads wear evenly under a large seating group or a long dining table.

A Multi-Color Palette Built on Green

Green is the binding color: a soft grass to lime tone that covers more of the field than anything else and cools toward sage and celadon where it meets the ivory ground. Over that run two distinct blues, a clear cornflower in the broad passages and a saturated peacock turquoise in the smaller flecks, so the blue areas read with depth rather than as one flat block. The gold is a true mustard, warm and slightly olive, and it is the strongest note in the rug. Rose pink, blush and a touch of coral gather in the upper right and soften the whole composition. Ivory, cream and a muted taupe supply the neutral ground that keeps all of it legible. The close-up of the pile shows how many separate dye lots are actually in play, pink next to sky blue next to gold within a single row of knots, which is why the rug reads as multi-color from across a room but as subtle and layered from a few feet away.

Hand-Knotted in India

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this piece is a fair example of why. The loom tag on the back records the roll, design number 1306 and the color as green multi, along with the no child labour declaration. The back photographs show even, well-packed rows and clean straight sides on a cotton foundation, which is what holds a rug this wide flat over time. The wool is thick, soft and lightly lustrous, cut to a medium pile that takes foot traffic without crushing, and it carries dye beautifully, which matters enormously on a design built from gradients rather than outlines. If you are looking through modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs, this one offers the scale and the color range that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
