It is knotted by hand in India on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, and the drawing follows the classic Sarouk formula: a clear tomato red ground carrying detached flowering sprays, framed by a deep black border of scrolling vines. The weave is even edge to edge, the selvedges are tight, and because the piece has never been on a floor the pile still stands at full height. Buyers looking at oversize rugs rarely find this width in a floral design at this price. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is drawn as an all-over floral composition, which is what collectors recognise immediately as Sarouk work: separate bouquets, curling serrated leaves and small flowering shrubs floating on open ground rather than locked into a lattice. Look at the ends and you find a pair of large footed vases, each spilling a feathered spray upward into the field, with smaller vases repeated at the four corners of the composition. Between them sit 8 petal rosettes, tulip forms, single blossoms and long curved acanthus leaves that carry the eye down the 24' length. The main border is a continuous meander of palmettes and split leaves, and it is flanked on both sides by narrow guard bands of reciprocal boxes and tiny blossoms, then by a wider ivory stripe of running vine that lifts the whole frame away from the dark ground. The drawing stays balanced across a very wide field, which is the hard part on a rug this large.

Color: Tomato Red Field Against a Deep Black Border

The field reads as a bright tomato red with a slight brick undertone, clean and uniform across its full width, and the wool takes light well enough that the ground shifts between warm scarlet and deeper brick depending on where you stand. Against that, the main border is a near black brown, dark enough to read as black from across a room, which is exactly what gives the red its punch. The floral work is where the rest of the palette lives: soft sage and olive green leaves, ivory and cream blossoms, warm gold and honey outlines, slate blue and pale grey highlights, and small hits of rust orange inside the border flowers. The guard bands run pale grey blue and ivory, and the ivory outer stripe finishes the edge. Reds, greens and blacks of this weight are a formal palette, and they sit comfortably with dark wood floors, mahogany furniture and antique brass.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and we say that with confidence rather than apology. Indian workshops have inherited the loom skill, the wool supply and the dye knowledge needed to build a floral Oriental rug at a scale very few looms can attempt.
