Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral design rather than a single medallion layout: long feathered leaf sprays, curving flowering vines, bud clusters and small 8 petal rosettes are arranged in mirrored pairs up and down the length, with a small dark rosette marking the center. Each spray is drawn with an outlined stem and a run of pale leaflets, so the pattern reads as botanical and open, with plenty of plain burgundy ground breathing between the motifs. The main border is a wide black band of large palmettes and rosettes joined by leafy stems, and it is framed by a slate grey vine stripe on one side and gold guard stripes on the other, with a fine reciprocal trefoil ribbon at the outermost edge. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug of this length takes disciplined cartoon work.

A Burgundy Field with Olive, Gold and Blue

The ground is a deep burgundy, close to oxblood, with a faint wine cast where the light catches the pile at an angle. Against it the drawing is picked out in ivory, soft gold and apricot, with olive and dark forest green leaves, slate blue and grey blossoms, and touches of salmon pink and dusty rose. The black main border pulls the whole thing together and makes the apricot and rose palmettes glow, while the gold guard stripes act as a warm outline that keeps the black from reading heavy.
