15' x 23'7" Agra Rug | Black Field All-Over Floral Vines | Oversize Palace Size, Made in India

This is a true palace piece: 15' x 23'7" of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the Agra tradition with a black field, a deep burgundy main border and an all-over garden of gold, ivory and sage blossoms. At this scale the weavers had to hold a single drawing steady across more than 350 square feet, and the vine work still meets cleanly at every corner. Pieces of this footprint are rare on the open market, which is why buyers searching oversize rugs so often come up empty. The pile is full and untouched, the fringe is original and the rug has never been on a floor. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the black ground carries a continuous all-over lattice of thin gold vine that loops, splits and reconnects across the full 23'7" length, hanging palmettes, open rosettes, tulip buds, serrated acanthus leaves and small curling cloud-band tendrils off every turn. The drawing is mirrored on both the long and short axes, so a large lobed palmette sits on the centerline of each end and matching pairs of blossoms answer each other left and right. Three borders frame the field: a narrow sage vine guard, a wide burgundy main border carrying alternating shield palmettes and cypress-leaf sprays, and an outer sage band of small paired rosettes. The corners are fully resolved, with the border palmette turning the angle instead of being cut off, which is the detail that separates a properly cartooned Oriental rug from a mass-produced one.

A Black Field Against Burgundy, Sage and Gold

The field is a saturated black with just enough depth in the dye that it reads as ink rather than as flat paint, and it does the hardest job in the rug: it pushes every light color forward. Against it the vine is drawn in a soft antique gold, the large blossoms in cream and butter yellow shaded with terracotta and rust at their centers, and the leaves in a muted olive and dusty sage that keeps the palette from turning brassy. Scattered highlights of soft blue-green, old rose and mushroom brown appear in the smaller buds and cloud bands. The main border is a dark wine burgundy, warm rather than bright, edged on both sides by sage green guard stripes that pick up the leaf tones from the field. Ivory outlining runs around most of the larger motifs, giving the whole design a crisp edge from across a room.

Agra Weaving and Indian Craftsmanship

Agra has been a carpet-weaving city since the Mughal court workshops of the 17th century, and the name still describes a recognizable look: a formal all-over floral drawing, generous scale, and dense wool laid on a cotton warp. India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is made today, and this rug shows why. The knotting is even end to end, the back is tight and legible in the folded corner photo, and the selvedges and original fringe are clean and intact. Handspun wool with this much body wears in rather than down, which matters in a rug intended for a great room, a formal dining room seating twelve or more, or a hotel lobby.
