Design and Motifs

The field is an Indo-Persian all-over composition: broad serrated palmettes and lotus heads linked by a continuous scrolling vine, with lanceolate leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and star-shaped blossoms filling the spaces between. The repeat mirrors across the narrow axis, so each pair of palmettes sits face to face down the center line, which keeps a 30" wide rug from reading as a jumble at walking speed. There is no medallion and no open field, a deliberate choice for a runner where the whole rug is rarely seen at once. The main border runs a reciprocal vine of rosettes and curled leaves on red, and the outer and inner guards repeat a small meandering flower. The corners are resolved properly rather than cut off mid-motif, a detail that separates carefully drawn weaving from production shortcuts and one of the useful ways to judge any Oriental rug before you buy.

Ivory Ground, Deep Red Border and the Gold in Between

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, with a faint honey cast where the wool catches light. Against it the palmettes are worked in old gold and antique brass, shaded into soft camel and tan so no two blossoms read exactly alike. Sage and olive green outline the leaves and vines, cooling the gold and keeping the field from going monochrome, while small charcoal and near-black centers sit at the heart of many rosettes and give the pattern its punctuation. Touches of dusty rose and terracotta appear inside the flower heads. The border is a deep brick red, saturated but not loud, with its own ivory and gold vine scrolling over it, so the red frames the field rather than competing with it. This is a palette that sits well on oak, walnut and stone, and it works particularly hard in hallway runners, where a light ground keeps a long narrow space from feeling like a tunnel.

The wool is springy and takes a clear luster, cut at 3/8" so the pile is substantial enough to wear for decades in a corridor yet low enough to clear a door swing.
